Given what happened to Great Kills, I understand the impulse to panic and try to drive away.

What confuses me is that she drove south toward the ocean to take a backroad path with lots of stoplights to the Verrazano Bridge, instead of driving north into higher ground onto the SI Expressway. Same distance.

Either way, the Verrazano was closed and had been closed for hours.

The most charitable explanation was that she acted from sheer, crazed panic.

She lived a couple of doors down from a friend of mine in Great Kills. There is one large tree down on the block and no electricity. She made a tragic mistake leaving her home which was a good 50’ above the storm surge.

That said, an elderly couple died less than 1/4 mile from her home down by the water. I was down there the morning after and it looks like a bomb hit along the water.
