Staten Island Residents Wondering Where the Government is 3 Days After Sandy

It's just too tempting to compare the media response to government relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the response to Sandy. The dichotomy is stark.

ABC News:

*****

The residents of Staten Island are pleading for help from elected officials, begging for gasoline, food and clothing three days after Sandy slammed the New York City borough.

"We're going to die! We're going to freeze! We got 90-year-old people!" Donna Solli told visiting officials. "You don't understand. You gotta get your trucks down here on the corner now. It's been three days!"

Staten Island was one of the hardest-hit communities in New York City. More than 80,000 residents are still without power. Many are homeless, and at least 19 people died on Staten Island because of the storm.

*****

Three days after Katrina, New Orleans Mayor Nagin was on the radio, literally weeping about the lack of federal response to the desperation of the city:

*****

"You know the reason why the looters got out of control?" Nagin said. "We have most of our resources saving people. They were stuck in attics, man, old ladies. You pull off the doggone ventilator and look down and they're standing there in water up to their fricking neck."

"I need reinforcements," he said. "I need troops, man. I need 500 buses."

The relief efforts made so far had been "pathetically insufficient," Nagin said.

"They are thinking small, man, and this is a major, MAJOR deal," Nagin said. "God is looking down on this and if they are not doing everything in their power to save people, they are going to pay the price. Every day that we delay, people are dying, and they're dying by the hundreds, I am willing to bet you."

“But what’s the demographic makeup of Staten Island?”

According to the 2010 Census, there were 468,730 people living in Staten Island. Staten Island is the only borough in New York City with a non-Hispanic White majority.

According to the 2010 Census, 64.0% of the population was non-Hispanic White, 9.5%[1] non-Hispanic Black or African American, 0.0% non-Hispanic American Indian and Alaska Native, 7.4% non-Hispanic Asian, 0.2% from some other race (non-Hispanic) and 2.6% of two or more races (non-Hispanic). 17.3% of Staten Island’s population was of Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin (they may be of any race).

It’s Staten Island.

Lots of Italians on Staten Island. You can get a good cuppa coffee without going to a gourmet coffee shop.

If NY was a swing state FEMA and Homeland Security would bring in the big vehicles to find all the dead bodies—because the WH would have ordered them to identify the names so that their ballots could be cast on election day.

Make no mistake—the campaign ran the Benghazi debacle (to make sure the “Osama is dead, we won the war on terror” narrative stayed in place) and this Sandy debacle (to make sure the “we really care about people” narrative remains in place).

There is nothing more cynical, heartless or ruthless than a political campaign.

How do you tell an Obama spokesperson is lying? Their lips are moving.
