Some nonunion Ala. crews turned away from Sandy recovery

by Mark Thornhill

SEASIDE HEIGHTS, NEW JERSEY (WAFF) - The hurricane-ravaged east coast has been receiving north Alabama help, but crews from Huntsville Utilities learned they'll be doing work in Long Island, New York instead of in New Jersey.

Crews from Huntsville, as well as Decatur Utilities and Joe Wheeler out of Trinity headed up there this week, but Derrick Moore, one of the Decatur workers, said they were told by crews in New Jersey that they can't do any work there since they're not union employees.

The crews that are in Roanoke, Virginia say they are just watching and waiting even though they originally received a call asking for help from Seaside Heights, New Jersey.

The crews were told to stand down. In fact, Moore said the crew from Trinity is already headed back home.

Understandably, Moore said they're frustrated being told "thanks, but no thanks."

At least Huntsville has now found someone who wants their help.

Tony Soprano was from Jersey.

Must just be a coincidence the Shows Creator made that decision.

Which reminds me, does the United States have an Embassy in Jersey, or just a Consulate?

If I was ANY utility from the south, I’d turn my crews around. If Huntsville isn’t good enough for them, then none of us are. Where were all these union thugs after the April 2011 tornado outbreak in Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and Tennessee?

Those utility workers in Huntsville, Decatur, and elsewhere busted their butts to restore power after the massive damage that those tornadoes dealt to those areas.

Which reminds me of a joke I received by e-mail.

a UNION man goes to a house of ill repute and decides to take one of the girls, only if the house is UNIONIZED!

It was! They send out a 60 year old prostitute and the man balks. The owners say it has to be this way as SHE HAS SENIORITY!

Hey Chris Christie,

you seem to think Obama can turn things around for NJ but don't tell your power co. Unions to "stand down" or your union thug leaders to shut up and sit down until all NJ power is back on!

Of course it is. It exposes their idiocy of attacking Bush and all things self-reliant.

Naive people sometimes get it. Turn away help because of some code.......I would just go wherever that bullcrap didn’t exist. I would just go to West Virginia, maybe they could use some assistance.

Looks like the offending union entity might be Seaside Heights, NJ’s own electric power system.

Quoting from their web site:
“”The Borough of Seaside Heights owns and operates the electric utility for Seaside Heights. The electric department consists of a crew of three workers who maintain the towns entire electrical system and one office worker.””

I hope that Seaside Heights sits in the dark for a long, long time. In the meantime, I think that any larger utility would welcome the help, and even though there might be a bit of dissonance between crews at, e.g., Jersey Central Power & Light and Huntsville, they’d certainly be receptive to have experienced line workers out there putting things back together.

It’s not like they are undercutting the union members pay. The utility workers from Alabama are working for free, or at least their volunteer services are payed for by Southern Company.

Lots of AL crews came here to TX after our hurricane, when virtually every utility pole was down all across a dozen counties. They were great. Friendly and worked hard. Lived in pup-tents in the parks at night, and endured brutal temperatures for days. And, our power guys in TX have done the same, gone to other hotspots after these devastating hurricanes, sending caravans their way, to LA, FL, MO, wherever.

Being turned away just boggles my mind. What the hell is wrong with blue states? They sure don’t seem to be sharing the same America I do. Guess I shouldn’t be surprised at anything considering they’re defined by their vote for a POS agitator like Obama. Incidents like this are why I often think secession has some genuine merit.

Good. Maybe they won’t have power back by Nov. 6 and won’t get to vote. Stupid is as stupid does.
