A Virginia company filed a lawsuit after it was forced to stop its construction of a monument in Alabama honoring a noted Confederate general, who also was a member of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK).
The federal suit, filed by KTK Mining of Richmond, claims that the company received the necessary permits to do the work on the monument in Old Live Oak Cemetery honoring Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, The Selma Times-Journal reported.
However, the city of Selma, Alabama, suspended the permits when the project drew protests.
The KTK mining company claims it had not received notice prior to the suspension.
"The city made a representation that he could do the work, he invested time, money, energy, planning and now the city has stopped that without any compensation," said City Council President Cecil Williamson, according to ABC News.
The city filed a response saying that its actions were reasonable and that it has legal immunity.
"We need monuments to people who are trying to build this country not monuments to people who were the first grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan," said Selma State Senator Hank Sanders.
KTK Mining filed claims with the city of Selma, seeking compensation of $600,000.

Any guesses as to the political party affiliation of Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest?
Can’t help but think of all the stuff named after “Sheets” Byrd.
>>The city filed a response saying that its actions were reasonable and that it has legal immunity.<<
I 100% guarantee the city does NOT have immunity in contract issues.
I hope you’re right. It’s up to the city, apparently, whether a monument to Gen. Forrest is built or repaired or whatever, but if they made a contract and then backed out, they owe the contractor for his costs.
As far as I know, there is no such organization as the “Klu” Klux Klan. The correct name is the “Ku” Klux Klan.
Frankly, I’d like General Forrest to happen upon the scene when flash mobs loot a store, or when a mob of blacks pummels a white guy.
Build it. Put a plaque on it that sais...”General Forrester (D-AL)”
Couldn't help but think of you when I saw this thread, for some reason. :-)
Every time someone says it’s “Klu” instead of “Ku” I swear I want to rip off my hood, throw my kippa in the air and go completely verklempt.
I’ll try ‘’Famous Democrats’’ for $500 Alex.
Oy, just because some putz wants to go around with a sheet on his head hating everybody, for this you get verklempt? So they don’t know from ‘’Klu’’ or “Ku’’.Clam down already, you should live so long. Have a glass of tea and a nice cherry blintz already.
Frankly I’d like to see the white guy pull out a .45 and forget about the hooded bigots.
Just what is the problem with General Forrest? He was an honorable and wily fighter for the CSA. He founded the KKK as a response to difficult circumstances brought on by the Federal occupation. After all, most southern whites were not allowed to vote in the late 1860’s unless they took a “loyalty oath.” Moreover, the excesses and illegal activities of the Klan came long after Forrest’s day. Okay, he was a Democrat. That I will hold against him, but he was a Democrat in the days when Democrats were loyal to America and its founder’s ideals even if they were not loyal to the United States of America. That is more than you can say for today’s Democrats.
Make that founders’ ideals. We had more than one of them.
Me too. But look at the areas where some of these attacks are taking place and figure the odds of the white guy having a CCP.
LOL! Youse guys haz a meshuggah.
Selma State Senator Hank Sanders.
Is he actually reading English words from that page, or is it a blank-sheet prop?
I ran a pecan orchard and lived in his district; I've had dealings with the man.
Senatuh Sahnduhs. Corrupt to the core. And, for good measure, a race-baiter. Worst kind of "public servant".
nathanbedford forrest ping
Is he by any chance the love child of the Colonel? He ought not to eat at daddy’s franchises quite so often.
General Nathan Bedford Forrest should have his statue built.
He is probably the quintessential American of the era. Of daring, skill and redemption.
He was a slave trader before the war (but refused to break apart families).
Joined the Confederates as a private.
Rose to the rank of General.
Personally engaged and killed over 40 union soldiers.
Arguably the BEST general of the war - recruited, trained and armed his own armies (as the CSA could do nothing logically in the west).
Continually engaged numerically superior enemy forces which were always better armed and usually won.
His tactics are still studied at West Point.
After the war, founded the KKK to defend whites from the hardships of the post war south.
Disbanded the KKK when they become a terror organization.
Called the black man his brother and become a loyal American
Forrest didn’t found the KKK. He was elected Grand Wizard, likely in absentia, in Memphis some time after it was founded. There is no historical source documentation that he ever did anything as Grand Wizard except give a talk or two, and give orders to disband the organization. No evidence he ever “rode with” the KKK or owned KKK paraphernalia (hood, robe, etc.) After the war, he spent a lot of time attempting to get the vote reinstated for Confederate veterans.
Ever hear of Bernie Goetz?
