Around here (walking distance from Romney’s former mansion in Belmont), ballots are paper. You blacken the appropriate ovals and shove the completed ballot into the slot. The machine reads in the ballot, tallies it, and stores it. If there’s a problem, there is always recourse to the stored paper ballots.
