Now that the dust has settled in the New Mexico desert where supersonic skydiver "Fearless Felix" Baumgartner landed safely on his feet, researchers are exhilarated over the possibility his feat could someday help save the lives of pilots and space travelers in a disaster.

How do they get past the problem of going 17,000 mph when they hit the atmosphere? Gonna get a bit toasty in that suit.

He wasn’t falling from an exoatomospheric height, so a suit of that design should work if you have to bail out that high.

This is kind of important since the next step in transport looks to be suborbital craft flying at about that same height - as soon as the greenies shut up and go away.

During liftoff, during the initial boost phase, way before reaching orbital velocity, for one. Then again, I have seen ideas for bringing a space-suited human back to earth from LEO, some wild, some cool.

This subject reminded me of Starship Troopers (the book, not the movie.)

"The heavily mechanized units of M.I. troops were attached to interstellar troop transport spacecraft, which then delivered them to planetary target zones, by dropping groups of Mobile Infantrymen onto the planet surface from orbit via individual re-entry capsules (hence the book's slang term "cap troopers" for M.I. troops). "

NASA will now sell ad space on their suits?

The speed of sound is quite a bit slower than escape velocity.

I saw that movie in 3rd or 4th grade at a friend’s birthday party. We had been told we were going to see “Blue Water, White Death”.... I’m still a little bitter about that bait-and-switch.
