To: Hemingway's Ghost

Talking to my libinlaw years ago, I was telling her about something I’d just read in Sowell’s “Intellectuals” book.

Me: Liberals don’t care how much corruption, fraud, and waste are in any of their social programs, as long as everyone gets covered that needs it.

LiL: That’s wrong! We absolutely DO care that there is fraud and waste in the programs. [two second pause] But it’s more important that everyone that needs help gets it.

Me: That’s what I just said.

LiL: [pause] Let me think about that.[pause] It just sounded so mean when you said it.
