Salafis have been doing this for centuries. Heck, they destroy Muslim art. During the first Saudi kingdom, the Wahabbis destroyed shrines in Mecca. This desecration led to many Hijaz Arabs allying with the army of the Ottoman Sultan/Caliph to expel them from the holy sites and send them back to the wastland of the Nejd. The Qutbist faction of the Muslim Brotherhood is even worse. But even local North Africans did this type of this during the
Almohad (al-Muwaḥḥidun)Calpihate in North Africa and Al-Andalus.
