I went to college there back in the ‘80s, and the 5600 block of Blackstone was fine back then.

Basically, I determined the boundaries were (making adjustments for sex and time of day),:

West: Cottage Grove
North: Girls 51st Street/Boys 47th Street
South: 61st Street
East: Laske Michigan (of course)

My walking route to campus took me from the Shoreland (5454 S. Shore Drive, close to the lake), to the campus at 57th and Ellis. I took various routes, and Blackstone was a safe grad student heavy area.

Back during the JFK administration, I could walk from 3300 S State to the Loop and back in daytime, although I wouldn't have risked it at night.

A dorm-mate would take the steel leg off his desk and wrap the narrow end with tape for a grip, and then venture off campus with like-minded colleagues at night. I don't think he ever used it, though.

ps. Is Laske Michigan what the Polacks called it? ≤}B^)
