“Gentlemen, prepare to defend yourselves!”

I wonder if his preference for using a 1911 pistol as his only defense was accurate? He basically refused to pick up an M16 for the duration of the battle. Not that I blame him, I'd probably feel more comfortable with the tried and true 1911 over the 5.56mm at that point in time as well, but I'll bet he could have procured an M14 for himself very easily and used ammo for the M60 to resupply....

I understand he stated (on the battlefield) if the time came for him to pick up a rifle, there would be plenty laying around.

All accounts from the battle at LZ X-Ray say Plumley used the M1911 as his weapon. It should be noted that his primary functions were to Keep Hal Moore alive. Not an easy task as Moore is not one to hide. Also, to run the LZ. Collect and distribute supplies and ammo. It was reported that above the constant noise of battle his voice could be heard shouting instructions. A hot LZ maestro. I like the story of Plumley pulling a white hot magnesium flare out of an ammo crate and tossing it away, barehanded.
