Didn't get racin’ on radio in Fun City when I was a kid. First exposure to him was Wide World of Sports where we would get to see week (or more) old tape of races. Pretty sure the newsreels of Indy that we would see at the theaters had Ed Herlihy narrating so HE was my "voice of racing" for a while.
I remember a lot of stuff from the late 60s , other folk had abc and wide world of sports thank goodness, we didn’t even have a TV until 1960 and then heck, it pulled in one channel, nbc. all black and white. none of Nascar’s ‘diversity’. no sirree
