It has been reported that I was seriously ill--it was another man; dying--it was another man; dead--the other man again...As far as I can see, nothing remains to be reported, except that I have become a foreigner. When you hear it, don't you believe it. And don't take the trouble to deny it. Merely just raise the American flag on our house in Hartford and let it talk. - - Letter to Frank E. Bliss from Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens), 11/4/1897

I'm sorry you have already given up on America. My Grandchildren will be deeply saddened to hear it. I've been telling them that "it ain't over 'til the fat lady sings"!

Something will rise from the ashes after America has its “reset”. But, the America that you remember is gone and your grandchildren will never live in the great nation that you and I grew up in. Perhaps they will build a great nation or perhaps they will live as slaves in the Planet of the Apes, but it is far better to teach them to recognize reality and to build on that instead of reminiscing about the glory days and pretending that those days are still with us.

The fat lady has been singing for a decade or more and no one is listening. We could have reversed the course in the 1990s or after 9/11, but we continued to outsource jobs for immediate profits, we shoved God into a corner of the week, and we imagined that we can save the planet by polluting the other side of the world so we could pretend that we are “green”. We borrowed money we can’t repay to buy gas from our enemies so we could drive vehicles that are bigger and more powerful than they have ever been as our families shrunk to the smallest ever.

I didn’t “give up”. I “grew up”.
