US on High Alert as Mideast Violence Spreads

By Caitlin Burke and Efrem Graham CBN News Friday, September 14, 2012

U.S. diplomatic missions in the Middle East and North Africa are on high alert Friday as violence over an anti-Muslim film continues to spread.

Angry Muslim demonstrators in Jordan, Bangladesh, Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Tunisia, and even Israel, are now joining the anti-American protests.

Today, U.S. officials are watching and waiting to see if the fury boils over. Traditionally, the period after Friday's weekly prayers is a time of protest in the Muslim world.

In Egypt, police are using tear gas to keep crowds away from the U.S. Embassy compound.

The new vigilance comes after a reportedly blunt conversation between President Obama and Egyptian President Mohammad Morsi.

"I don't think that we would consider them an ally, but we don't consider them an enemy," Obama said of Egypt.

Meanwhile, FBI agents from New York are on their way to Libya to assist in an investigation of the attacks.

"We are going to bring those who killed our fellow Americans to justice," Obama vowed. "I want people around the world to hear me: To all those who would do us harm, no act of terror will go unpunished."

But some are questioning if the United States could have prevented the attacks beforehand.

A British newspaper quoted a senior diplomatic source as saying the U.S. State Department had credible information 48 hours before mobs attacked the consulate in Benghazi, Libya, and the embassy in Egypt. Still, no warnings were given for diplomats to go on high alert and lockdown.

The Obama administration denies those reports.

But Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney continues to slam Obama over the attacks.

"The world needs American leadership," Romney said. "The Middle East needs American leadership and I intend to be a president that provides the leadership that America respects and will keep us admired throughout the world."

But recent polls by ABC News and Washington Post show that when it comes to key issues like terrorism and international security, Americans trust the president over Romney.

The US is on “high alert” because of the “Religion of Peace”? I don’t get it. I thought the muzzies love us now.

They seem like they’re really scared of Obama. November can’t get here fast enough, but we still have to wait until January for a real foreign policy again. That’s of course if we can outvote all the idiots. I miss my country.

“I don’t think that we would consider them an ally, but we don’t consider them an enemy,” Obama said of Egypt.

Well what do you know. Just a few mo’s ago Egypt was our ally and a fairly moderate Islamic country at that.

Wonder what happened?
