Maybe the Germans could pitch some Euros into our beggar’s cup since we were nice enough to rebuild their country after they went insane and elected a dictator. After all, we have much in common in that regard.

To Germany's credit, they did pay debts and reparations into the 1970's for WWII. I don't know if they paid it all, but they did get some healthy invoices from the US.

My father received a check from the German Government in the late 70s for reparations due for ancestors seized assets that were executed in concentration camps.

Note to self: Ask Dad for more details on what that was all about.

If you are talking about the Marshall plan, that is a common misconception. France and the UK got twice / three times the money on a per capita basis, and they basically got it for free, whereas German got loans which it repaid. Also: The patents that went to the US as war reparations were worth ten times that.

The Marshall plan was important psychologically and in that it made money available at the right moment. Also, Americans should take great pride in that they help feed a starving people after the war (e.g. grain and corn deliveries, CARE packages). But rebuild Germany the US did not.
