Consequently American political thought is laid out in the form of a bi-modal saddle ~ with no middle at all ~ and only a small fringe surrounding the two great Coalition parties.
Each is dedicated to winning.
You win by securing your base (among your primary coalitions) FIRST, then reaching out to peel off a small element in the other party, or, alternatively you secure your base and you seek to suppress voting by members of the other major coalition party.
This year we have an interesting situation. The Republicans failed to secure their own base ~ and have a candidate who invited the single biggest faction in the party to take a hike. The Democrats secured their base ~ but they have a candidate who is such a failure his popularity among his fellow party members is so low they are going to suppress their own vote.
This is unique in American politics ~ a RACE TO THE BOTTOM.
Makes it difficult to predict!
But, still, there are no "moderate voters" In this mess.
