Communism/socialism/progressiveism strives to replace God in society with government.

Communism has been a blatant failure, but socialism, while failing economically, has been very successful politically. It spread so well that the Europe (and now the US) that led the world are playing increasingly insignificant roles in it; they have taken to socialism to the point where they no longer reproduce their own populations and are beholden to the Third World for replacements.
