The Not Ready for Prime Time Player-Sandra Fluke and the cultural contradictions of feminism
WSJ ^ | 9-7-12 | JAMES TARANTO

What's most interesting about the Fluke comment, though, is that it points to a central cultural contradiction of feminism. Libertarian feminists sometimes argue that left-wing ones aren't "true feminists" because they want women to be dependent, albeit on government rather than on men. But feminism is about sexual equality or female supremacy, not freedom or independence. As long as the government isn't masculine in character ("patriarchal"), its size and scope are irrelevant to feminism.

When one considers the specific context of Fluke's above-quoted comment, however, it turns out to be as patriarchal a conception of government as one can imagine. By criticizing Romney for failing to "stand up" against Limbaugh, she faults him for a lack of chivalry. The duty of the president in a Flukist regime is to act as a white knight when a fair maiden's honor has been besmirched.

And Fluke isn't even the first feminist to make this sort of claim on Fluke's behalf. Recall that back in the spring, Gloria Allred urged that Limbaugh be prosecuted under a dormant Florida statute making a misdemeanant of "whoever speaks of and concerning any woman, married or unmarried, falsely and maliciously imputing to her a want of chastity." That law--almost certainly unconstitutional under the 14th Amendment's Equal Protection Clause because it treats the sexes in a grossly disparate way--has been on the books for 129 years. The Flukist Democrats will take America forward to 1883.

The short answer, to use an old description, is that Sandra is a “Clueless Dweeb”.

A very accurate description of the mindset of the convention attendees.

Otherwise how can you call any of these screeching fools leaders.

Free free What right makes things free? The Constitution says we have a right to own guns. If I can’t afford one then maybe the gubment should provide one to me for free.

“Strong” and “independent” feminists look for daddies and husbands in politicians. They look for somebody who will provide for, care for and protect them. But, oh no, they don;t need men. They can go it alone.

Seriously, the party of Andrew Jackson and Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman chose to showcase someone whose claim to fame is that she demands that somebody else pay for her birth control.

Hey, at least they're open about their priorities.

I find it amusing and perplexing that feminine leftists like Fluke, who perpetually spout off about strong, independent women, are the people who demand Big Government control every aspect of people’s lives. They say they don’t want the dreaded Patriarchy controlling their miserable lives, but they sure don’t mind Big Totalitarian Government telling them what to do.

Maybe this perspective will help-

It’s not that they mind a big totalitarian government controlling them, it’s that they want a big totalitarian government that can control you. The trade off is worth it to them.

“The short answer, to use an old description, is that Sandra is a “Clueless Dweeb”.”

Well, yes.

Look. My pastime is building model sailing ships. I pay for that on my own dime and would not dream of asking either my employer or any government to pay for the items I need to enjoy this pastime. After all, I do it because I enjoy the time I spend on it.

Ms. Fluke on the other hand, expects others to pay the expenses associated with her pastimes. Because if the object of sex is not procreation, it is just a pastime — something you do for pleasure, no different than my building model ships.

So Ms. Fluke, let’s make a deal. If you expect others to pay for your hobbies, how about paying me for mine. (Trust me — a Preac Saw costs a lot more than a year’s worth of condoms or generic birth control pills. Haven’t bought one, since I cannot afford it. With you paying the freight, no problem.)

And of course the first REAL feminists, who were often JAILED for demonstrating for women’s suffrage, were very much pro-life.

They rightly saw abortion as violence against women and children.

I STILL have no clue what these ladies are mad about.

We can vote. Work in any field. Take off any time to have kids. Return weeks or years later to the work force with no stigma attached. We almost always are awarded the house and kids in a divorce. We have access to women's shelters in every major city. We can have abortions and are not even required to notify the father. We are given special treatment for being women business owners. We have entire industries catering to our every hearts desire. We get to be offended if anyone suggests we do anything domestic. We can be notoriously promiscuous and still accuse a man of rape, and ruin him. On a whim we can threaten to sue for sexual harassment. We can demand to be taken seriously, and it is acceptable for us to flirt or cry or scream in order to get our way.

The War on Women slogan is so catchy and fun to say, but seriously ALL this noise because loose women now want strangers to pay for their condoms and abortion clinic visits? Ridiculous! These feminists are nasty monsters and I can not identify with them at all.

They saw abortion for what it was - the way a man could get sex without commitment of marriage.

Dems are “pro-choice”, but only within the realm of sex.

ANY other aspect of your life requires their control and permission.
