When ole flinty-eyed, soft spoken Clont began speaking to "O's" empty seat, telling him to "shut up" then continuing with the dialogue to the imaginary Obama, was classic comedic "shtick.".
Audience was unprepared for this, I can tell you but as he continued with the banter, it was classic tough-gut, Clint.
Reminiscent of the spaghetti westerns, ie, "Hang 'Em High.". I half way expected Clint to spit at Obama's chair!
Of course, Hollywierd was incensed, how dare one of "them" appear on public to 'dis "the one!"
Another writer inferred here that Clint appeared not to have a grasp on reality. I can tell you all that some in the hall didn't grasp what technique Clint was using but that was only because we weren't able to see him except on a very large monitor.
My only complaint was that the RNC planners hadn't miked him up enough, as his raspy quiet voice needed it considering the loud background.
Thank you for your report from the scene!
The only thing missing here was the spitoon placed next to the chair Clint might have availed himself of from time to time. Lawdy, what a gag sight that would have been if he missed the mark, splattering cheroot juice all ove the chair.
I just commented on another Eastwood thread - -
I experienced outburst after outburst.
Couldn’t wait for the re-run - laughed again.
He said, “In Hollywood, Conservatives don’t go around ‘Hot Doggin’ it.’
‘Biden is the intellect of the Democrat Party!
He was hysterical!
And elderly - so what?
Let the pundits have their day - - hmmm - sounds similar to - - -
Recently saw on TV a shot of Obama from the back, seated in a chair, his head barely showing above a nice chair, (yes, his head looked like an urn . .) with a sign that says “Taken.”
Really don’t know if it’s real or not.
Thanks for the on site view. I heard him over the ABC radio feed on WMAL. Didn’t know about the teleprompter problem but Clint spoke loud and clear with a steady voice when speaking of our country. The scathing comedic piece was clearly done as a character. I heard it as harking back to Jimmy Stewart talking to the imaginary six foot rabbit Harvey in the movie by the same name, but that’s me. Overall the radio broadcast conveyed it well. Could have done without the real geezer, Sam Donaldson talking over Clint so much. I look forward to catching the youtube version w/o the commentary.
Clinton out Alinskied the Alinsky-ites, fixing the empty chair as obama and then ridiculing him. Effective? Judging from the WH tweet response of the chair photo and comment, yeah it stung Barry. And of course, baby cakes Barry had nothing to do with finding the photo file and responding on twitter.
It was nearly 2 hours after returning to hotel (1:30) and grabbing a tiny bite before packing up to hop on a van taking me to airport (there will definitely be NO sleeping this night), and I was torn between giving an "on-site view of Clint's presentation" to my friends on freerepublic and attending to the business at hand.
Now, having listening to a few other comments from people who have a vested interest in slamming it, others who merely couldn't "get it" because of their inability to hear and see it, and reading my favorite commentator on humor, Rush Limbaugh. As you are aware, Rush is totally deaf so his not hearing Clint is understandable and I'm not certain if Rush was watching Clint's performance on network TV or on C-Span but I am told many, if not most of the networks talked over the performance.
When Rush "got it" he realized what understated brilliance, seasoned academy award winner actor, writer, director Clint Eastwood was serving up to all.
Seriously folks, watch any classic Eastwood movie and you will never find him using volumes of dialogue, just a few well-pointed words, delivered staccato style almost his breath. That was it!
That was the Clint being Clint, talking to "empty-chair" Obama!
If you care to take the time and trouble and go back and watch it (I'm certain it's out there on you-tube, if it's not been scrubbed) to re-visit, with these explanations in mind and you will realize what, in classic Eastwood style he was thinking about Obama and the American people, for he was also speaking to you and me.
Lastly, I am very honored and grateful for my fellow KS Republicans for giving me the privilege of attending on their behalf and thanking God for His good gifts that made it financially possible to make the trip.
