In ABC Webcast, Yahoo! News's Chalian Says Romneys ‘Happy to Have a Party When Black People Drown’

Updated with correction [11:43 a.m. EDT]: Yahoo! Washington bureau chief David Chalian made the offensive remark, ABC News's Julie Townsend told NewsBusters in a phone conversation a few minutes ago.

During live coverage of the Republican National Convention here in Tampa, [original wording: an ABC News employee] Yahoo! News Washington bureau chief David Chalian provided the perfect example of the pervasive anti-Republican bias Mitt Romney faces in his bid to unseat President Barack Obama.

In video broadcast Monday night by ABC over the Internet, the person Chalian can be heard claiming that GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney and his wife Ann are unconcerned about the fate of residents of the New Orleans area who are currently being hit by Hurricane Isaac.

“They aren’t concerned at all,” the person says on tape. “They are happy to have a party when black people drown.”

That line elicits laughter from several employees listening in on the joke.

From the audio, it appears the person Chalian was talking to an unknown individual named “John” who presumably was making additional jokes at the expense of Ann Romney although such jokes cannot be heard on the clip.

The anti-Romney joke was made while the person, presumably an ABC News producer, was on an active microphone, apparently unaware that his/her quips against the former Massachusetts governor were being recorded and broadcast live.

Unmentioned by the ABC News jokester is the fact that the Republican National Committee canceled the entirety of Monday's program or that President Obama did not cancel any of his regularly scheduled campaign fund-raising parties that night.

We had better brace ourselves because from now to election day we are going to see split screen ads of Republicans partying as Hurricane Issac caused damage.

Well, why not? Obama sure didn’t see any reason to call off his campaign because of Issac, and supposedly he’s the one who has the power to do something to help these “black people”.

I use Adblock whenever I use Yahoo, New York Times, or Washington Post websites.

I never see their ads ,let alone click on them. Don’t subsidize the liberal media.

Calls for ads showing obama going to his fundraisers while “black people are drowning”. Where are the feds? the troops, the food, the helicopters? I don’t think FEMA responded quick enough.

These people are really stupid, a couple of months ago, I couldn’t have imagined myself supporting Romney, but it’s because of stupid and hateful liberal comments like this, I am now firmly in Romney’s corner. Now, once the Kenyan is out, then we’ll deal with Romney’s shortcomings, but in the meantime, Go Romney!

No different than Obama being happy to campaign at colleges while “black people drown”, as if only blacks lived along the gulf coast.

More of the mythology of katrina.

The gulf coast is located in hurricane alley and is a perpetual flood plain. These things have been happening for millenia and no human is going to change that.

There was as much flooding and bad weather along the midwestern river valleys this summer as there has been there.

How about if the Fed forces the abandonment of the coastal areas and turn them back over to the alligators. No? OK, then STFU.

There are approximately 8 weeks left, this is just the tip of the iceberg.

President Barack Obama gave a short statement regarding his administration’s efforts to deal with the Tropical storm Isaac, which is expected to become a hurricane.

However, is the President’s effort sufficient in the eyes of Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal?

Jindal openly criticized the President on Monday for failing to respond to the entire request for Isaac relief.

******

Monday night, from Governor Jindal’s press office:

Following a very limited federal disaster declaration by the President of the United States that only granted a portion of the state’s request, Governor Bobby Jindal sent a letter to the federal government requesting a full disaster declaration for the state.

The White House issued a release today which states that “the declaration builds on resources already deployed by FEMA and makes Federal funding available for certain emergency activities undertaken by the state to prepare for and respond to the storm.” However, the limited declaration does not provide for reimbursement of expenses that the state is taking to prepare for the storm.
