yes and no. I should have rephrased as
"Life in the Islamic world was not that grim from the late 1800s until the start of the 70s -- Islam was on the retreat. In Egypt there was the rise of Pharoanism, with a harkening back to pre-Islamic Egypt. In Syria and Iraq the trend was to secularism. In Iran the people harkened back to Zoroastrianism etc.
Saudia was the only hold-oout. And then it got money to finance global jihad.
