Some people don’t seem to get the distinction between a sovereign state devising its own system and a federal government telling 310 million people how to live their lives.

That's because there is no distinction.

You obviously need lessons in the US Constitution.

You obviously have NEVER read Article I of the US Constitution nor have you read the 9th and 10 Amendments.

If you don’t know the distinction between federal and state powers, I kindly suggest you go to the local community college and take a class in basic government and federalism.
