...we don’t know all the particulars about the woman’s life to know if she was or wasn’t a Christian.

Thank you for your answer. The assumption in my question was that she wasn't a Christian as it regards whether she would achieve salvation due to her exceptional good works without acceptance of Christ as her personal savior. Your answer: "God is sovereign judge and if she is to be Saved...he’ll save her from the pit." to me, implies that God can make exceptions.

I don’t believe that God makes exceptions in the sense that he arbitrarily violates his own core nature. A reading of the Near death experiences of many folks suggests that Christ often snatches folks on the brink of the flames and when they recover, these folks are radically different persons as a result of their experiences. A reading of Revelation states that a final judgment will occurs and the “Lamb’s book of Life” is consulted to see if a person’s name is found therein. While the description of the event certainly is fearsome, it also shows the compassion of God. Can this man or that woman be ultimately saved? Can God see just the thin whispers of Christ in some poor pathetic soul? Is another soul a bent reed that shouldn’t be broken or a glowing ember that shouldn’t be snuffed out?

God is the sovereign judge and while there are those who will enter the lake of fire, there will be others saved, “literally by the skin of their teeth”. The Bible is very pointed as to what happens to those who have been exposed to the truth and have rejected it. It is not so clear from the Bible as to the final disposition of those who never heard the truth and had a choice; yet who may have lived a life of compassion and decency as though they had followed Christ (but had never known the name of the one they were following).

The Bible says God has revealed himself through-out nature and creation and men with some thought and with due diligence can begin to comprehend God’s attributes and rules of behaviour, so that none of us is without excuse.

Only God the Father alone can judge folks who, while never knowing the name of Christ in life, may yet find, at the end, that they have found themselves to be claimed by Christ. Christ said many would call him “Lord, Lord” yet it was those who did the will of the Father who would be saved.

Make no mistake, the evidence of the existence of God and his higher truths are all around us. The word of Christ has gone out to all the nations. The Holy Spirit even now will tug at the conscience of every human being, though for each person that may be for a limited season depending on that person’s responsiveness to the Spirit. When each person gives a final account to God of his life, the excuse “I didn’t know” will be a very difficult defense to mount!
