He used the word “legitimate” before the word “rape” to mean “real,” “forcible,” a tragic event that “really took place.” Anyone who doesn’t think false claims of rape can be made should check with Norma McCorvey, the “Roe” of Roe v. Wade.

No Akin was trying to minimize the implication of his pure Pro-Life position that women should be forced to carry children conceived from rape. He was saying women who are raped do not conceive because their body has a magical property to prevent conception. Therefore, women who claimed they were raped and want to abort a child are lying.

Rather than explain what Akin said why not start posting the actual comment.

“It seems to me, from what I understand from doctors, that’s really rare,” Mr. Akin said of pregnancies from rape. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something: I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be of the rapist, and not attacking the child.”

Politically imprudent, absolutely. But lets not overstate it.
