I’ve read many threads on this and apparently Mo. has sore loser rules prohibiting those who were in the primary and lost cannot run in the general.

Cannot run as a 3rd party or simply cannot run?

If the elected nominee drops out, that run would seem to be moot, because the contender is not running against the one who dropped out.

I thought the law was that they could not run as a write-in candidate in the general election, not that they could not be appointed by the Republican committe to replace Akin.

They could run, but ONLY if Akin pulls out and ONLY if the Central Committee picks them. No third party, no "independent", no write-in.
