Another Missouri Republican consultant suggests that Representative Jo Ann Emerson, the Republican who has represented Missouri’s eighth district since 1996, could be a top contender to replace Todd Akin if he quits. Her name has been making the rounds among party insiders, thanks in part to the fact that she’s currently the longest-serving House member in Missouri. Missouri GOP executive director Lloyd Smith used to be her chief-of-staff.
UPDATE: A colleague points out that Emerson is a member of the moderate-leaning Republican Main Street partnership, and generally less rightward than the three — Akin, Sarah Steelman, and John Brunner — who ran in the primary. Emerson’s American Conservative Union ranking for 2011 was 56, and for 2010 88; Akin’s ratings, in contrast, were 91.67 and 100 in those years respectively.
So then, Akin gets to stand on this ground:

Akin will win. This story has no legs and the sheeple will foget it by friday. People voted for him. He won. Party hacks like cornyn or Ann Coulter don’t trump democracy. Have the vote. I think when people come off this hysteria they will see that it was promoted by thr “chicken little press” in order to kill babies. “HOW DARE YOU NOT KILL THIS BABY IF MOMMY SAYS DADDY RAPED HER!!!”

Come on now. He didn’t stumble, just as Obama didn’t stumble when he said “You didn’t build that”. Both of them really believe what they said, and that is why you can’t back track with “I didn’t mean it that way”. If its good enough for Obama, its good enough for Akin.

She’s one of the few GOP moderates left, and by far the least conservative of the Missouri Republican congressional delegation. I predict a major backlash if Akin does leave and the GOP leadership picks her.

If the GOP-e can force out a pro-life candidate and put in one of their top RINO's, that's what they will do.
On what grounds?
It's not a good enough reason to defend his lightning rod personality deficit.
I thought the law was that they could not run as a write-in candidate in the general election, not that they could not be appointed by the Republican committe to replace Akin.
Even if he wins, he’s still working for his Democrat backers.
I think that passed yesterday? Its more complex now involving courts?
What this Akin kefuffle has done is demonstrate that the GOP is feckless and will not stand up against the opposition for any reason at all. I doubt this cowardly bunch can even defeat a wounded loser like Obama!
I'm saying the Missouri Republican Central Committee is a bunch of moderate RINOs. The "new" committee that was just elected in the primary (and includes some Tea Party people) will not take over until January. The "old" committee is not happy about that and is not above a parting shot.
It would be perfectly legal and besides, there isn't time for all that. We have less than 90 days.
Akin will step down in a few weeks.
1. Lack of money, some donors are asking for their donations be returned. Rep senate committee cut off funds. Sate GOP will not help.
2. You can’t run a campaign without money and this will evidently sink in to Akin.
3. Who will campaign with him? He is toxic in Mo no other Rep running will stand with him.
4. Who will help him organize his campaign? The state and county GOP organizations will not want to be associated and tainted by being associated with him. He can’t do this on his own. See 1,2and 3 above. He is isolated and alone in this state and that will eventually sink in.
5. On Tuesday night, he was the next senator from Mo. A few days later it was pulled from underneath him. He will need a few weeks to let that wound heal, but he will eventually realize his position.
6. He has his political reputation and legacy to consider. If he doesn’t step down and he loses, he will be the most despised politician in the state. If he steps down in a dignified manner to help his party, he will leave with some sense of respect.
They could run, but ONLY if Akin pulls out and ONLY if the Central Committee picks them. No third party, no "independent", no write-in.
Everyone, please pay attention. There have been a wide array of articles here on FR and initially we knew nothing of the specifics of the laws. What we know now with a relative degree of certainty is that neither Brunner or Steelman are eligible in any way to take the spot before the election, so that is no longer an issue.
True to some that we throw the dice on Akin but that has more long range problems than those monumental immediate ones of being able to defeat McCaskill. My view is that someone knew about his stance from which he uttered that idiotic remark about rape. The questioner, in my view, was given a heads up just as the Dems put the ads out there to help in getting him to run against. The worst part, if he were to win, is what else is in those cloak room discussions that they can use to sway his vote on any issue or go public with them as well?
If he is negotiating a reasonable replacement to those on this forum, good for him. If not, then get someone like Bond to accept the write-in if Akin won’t get out of the way and defeat both Akin and McCaskill. Considering Akin will wither on the political vine, as the vote gets closer those who support him on the principle notion will face the reality of McCaskill winning unless they do the prudent thing to insure a Republican victory.
Then God willing, Spence is elected Governor and sometime shortly after taking office Bond retires due to health and the Governor appoints the runner up in the primary, in this case Brunner, and all is corrected. Steelman just loses out, that is reality.
