Akin releases new ad apologizing for ‘legitimate rape’ comments

Republican Representative Todd Akin resisted pressure to quit the U.S. Senate race in Missouri on Tuesday, releasing a new ad apologizing for his inflammatory remarks about rape that have reinserted controversial abortion politics into the U.S. presidential campaign.

In an ad released online, Mr. Akin again apologized for his comments Sunday, when he claimed in a television interview that women could not get pregnant from “legitimate rape,” even as senior Republicans condemned his remarks and called for him to step aside in the race.

“Rape is an evil act. I used the wrong words in the wrong way, and for that I apologize,” Mr. Akin said in the spot.

“The fact is, rape can lead to pregnancy. The truth is, rape has many victims. The mistake I made was in the words I said, not in the heart I hold. I ask for your forgiveness,” he added. Mr. Akin, noting that he is the father of two daughters, also said he wanted “tough justice” for rapists and expressed compassion for victims.

Exactly. this guy staying in will be responsible for thousands of more abortion’s, not less, he’s a lying snake that doesn’t have any principles to stand on, otherwise he’d realize that seeing Obama Claire be re-elected goes against everything he “claims” to stand for. If he left, another candidate takes over and wins that seat, but he instead is putting himself out on in front, ahead of his beliefs, ahead of his party, ahead of his country.

Well, he did say rape...not “rape rape”.

Akin should have stepped out.

He needs to quit, but this disgusting pile of shit won’t do it. I wouldn’t be upset if he got kidnapped for three months or so so he can’t run.......

I think the issue is that he was so unprepared to answer a question that he should have been prepared to answer. He wasn’t only wrong, he was stunningly wrong. His position can be rationally explained, it’s just that what he said isn’t the way to do it. Nowhere even close. That more people don’t see that with clarity is astonishing.
Todd Akin's words (although clumsy) actually made me smile a bit, for any man who attempts to broach this topic, is a true champion of faith to me. Both Huckabee and Santorum had some difficulty too. It's only natural that one might stumble, as our nation has turned to the killing of their own children (for 40 years now!) as a "solution" to selfishness, or suffering, abuse, or others' threats. Just not a cheery topic, yet there's so much pressure for the killing to continue and the damage to the mothers be done.

Akin did his best at that time (and he'd agree with you he was ill prepared), he apologized, and I pray he continues on, and that people get over their smallness (and heal!) and realize what it is that makes a man big.

Yep. And she is one witch on wheels. I feel sorry for every senior in Missouri...as well as for the health of the WHOLE country.

It will be too late. The GOP must petition the court to replace their candidate from now on in. Considering the Dems have a majority of the Missouri Supreme Court, we are stuck with the narcissistic idiot.

I think the extent of his damage is actually pretty limited. He’ll damage the Missouri Senate race. He’ll affect Republican efforts to retake the Senate ... though maybe not decisively. I’m not sure of the numbers on that. I think there’s actually an outside chance he might still win — McCaskill is still a moron — though the odds of that definitely plummetted.

I don’t see him impacting any races beyond his own, though. He’s been resoundingly disavowed by everybody to Romney/Ryan to Rush Limbaugh to John Ashcroft. He’s pretty much a lone wolf at this point ... so I don’t think he’ll be bringing down any other conservatives.

“How do you defend anything if you’re too stupid to get elected?”

Good question. You certainly don’t defend and advance conservative principles by causing Democrats (who would but for you and your STUPID, STUPID actions and decisions be political “dead meat”) to be elected to the Senate.

You should listen to what he said. It's easy to find, and, despite how much we trust them, it beats hearsay from the MSM.

(The man delivered several solid punches on our opponents, and the press calls foul. And who do we believe, like a gaggle of knee-jerk pro-aborts?)

If he does not he, his family, his grandchildren, his city, his old district and State will be ridiculed for decades.

I suspect he's man enough to endure your ridicule. I only wish you were man enough to follow him into the fray.

What is worse he may single handily prevent the Republicans from taking the Senate. Which could result in more pro choice justices being appointed to the Supreme Court.

The Republicans ain't gonna do squat to stop the massacre. They've already spent that nickel - a hundred times over. But they're gonna recycle that ad for as long as suckers like you buy it. Gonna fall for it again, are ya? They thank you for your support.

This little brouhaha over a 40-second soundbite has done more to reveal the cowardice of FReepers than everything I've seen in my several years here combined. It's disgusting.

And don’t forget the corrupt Democrat apparatchik Robin Carnahan who is Missouri’s Secretary of State and in whose hands the bumbling Akin has just delivered our future.

Unbelievable. Our opponents are killing babies right and left, and when a man steps up and stands up to them, we want him dragged off the battlefield because he's not eloquent enough.

What utter cowards we are.

The only people who want him to remain in the race are you and the Democrats, especially Claire McCaskill. I wonder why you have joined the ranks of Democrats?

when you are in a political race you must be “eloquent enough”

Well ya got me there! I do agree with the Democrats on one point: They know you’re one of C.S. Lewis’s “men without chests”, lacking what it takes to stand up with a courageous man. And now so do I.

You would’ve hated Patton.

Geez, we’re talking about the murder of babies, and you want eloquence?! Don’t you see a problem with that?
