HALPERIN: “The national Republicans are feeling a little frustrated. not only do they not have any persuasive arguments that have worked so far but they’re having trouble finding him or reaching him. They’re not in dialogue with him as they might be with a normal party nominee.

This is basically the GOP saying “we tried, don’t blame us.”

God help us.

PPP has a poll out today with a Repub +9 sample and has Akin up by only 1. If the poll were reweighted with a R+4 sample, Air Claire would be up about 3. And this is before the pounding has started (with no defense from Rove, RNC, etc). He’ll be lucky to get 25% of the vote.

Looks like he’s serious about trying to ride the storm out.

Does anyone remember the 1990 Texas Governor’s race? AG Jim Mattox, GOP, ran against Dem Ann Richards. The Repub was a shoe in, (this IS Texas), but then Mattox made a joke about how women who are being raped should just “lay back and enjoy it”. The Democrat chick won.

Then I say poo poo to the conservatives of MO. Stand behind your candidate. Get over the politics of perfection. It will never be.

You’re thinking of Clayton Williams.

He's an engineer with a Divinity Masters and a former IBM manager, that doesn't sound like an idiot.

Like many of us, he latched on to a convenient and unproven truism to reconcile contradicting preferences.

It was Clayton Williams. In 1990, Texas still was a dem state starting to trend Repub but by no means assured Clayton would win. We still had Lloyd Bentsen (D) in Senate and not sure which way state would go. Richards won because of his gaffe but also because state was not assuredly one party or the other. What pushed Texas rightwards imo was Clinton victory in 1992, then Kay Bailey won in 93 and then George w. in 94 and the rest is history.

A bit of rope a dope until the clock runs out at 5PM.Maybe if Huckabee makes a public statement calling for him to step down for the good of the conservative movement he will get the message that if he chooses to toil on he will be doing it on his own dime. He will have a base of few campaign contributors while McCaskill has 12 million in the bank to draw pretty pictures of this guy as a neanthedal.

Yup, I couldn’t care less what the GOPe thinks or wants.

I think even less of the “conservative” blowhards who screech about states rights only to turn into mewling cowards who want the GOPe to fix things for them at the first sign of trouble.

If anyone is going to cost the GOP the senate its the idiots doing the work of the left for them and making sure to keep the story going. He’ll either win or lose on his own and people should worry about their own races. My candidates wisely haven’t spoken about it and seem unaffected by it.

That guy made a disgusting, offensive joke. There is no comparison to Akin stating a principled, Christian position and simply fumbling his word choice. Happens all the time to every politician.

We are already up to our eyeballs in poo poo because of Claire. We want her to go back to handing out big pharma pills instead of surgical procedures to the residents of her nursing home empire. Akin should have waiting until he had won the election to 'fix' America's wanton abortion crisis. Now he may have given the devils their perfect storm to ridicule those coveted/lusted after Independent voters.... Akin will NOT win with the conservative vote alone.

Why should he be talking to them? They already said they’re cutting off his funding. They’ve made up their mind. He should tell them to get lost until they decide to support their party and its nominees as they should.

Is he going to go AWOL during the campaign? Tin foil hat on. Is Akin maybe a sleeper candidate for McKaskill? He did take money from her and then makes the incredibly stupid comments a couple days before a switch can be made.

Is there a payoff for Akin after the election?

Next threat - the RNC, NRSC and GOP Pacs will inform him that they will throw all their efforts into mounting a write-in campaign. He has to be forced to see the light, but he’s still in denial.
