I know. I’m from New Jersey, and I used to walk to school when I was in the first grade. It was probably about one mile away. My younger brother got caught up in the integration nonsense and was bused to a school on the opposite end of town.

I got in trouble walking to school. I cut flowers from my teacher’s yard and gave them to her.

When I was 6, I was bussed to a school in the projects which was also on the opposite side of our town. It was like being thrown into a prison. The next year, my family moved and I was able to walk to school less than a quarter of a mile away. Some students were bussed into our school. They made up a majority of the discipline problems and filled up the remedial classes. I was in a gifted and talented class and hardly received any instruction (other than to be told which pages to read)as the teacher’s time was filled with trying to teach these students basic reading skills and breaking up fights.
