Firearms Restrictions Plan Fails in Corrales (NM)
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | Wed, Aug 15, 2012 | Rosalie Rayburn

A proposal to prohibit firearms on Corrales village property came under withering attack at the council meeting Tuesday, with opponents claiming it was a government attempt to impose tyranny.

The standing-room only crowd cheered, whooped and whistled as councilors defeated the proposal on a 4-2 vote.

The resolution proposed by Councilor Mick Harper would have forbid carrying, displaying or using firearms on specified public property, including the village offices, Municipal Court, senior center, community center, the library, recreation center and two village parks.

It said “the presence of openly armed individuals, particularly those carrying firearms, is likely to cause serious apprehension or intimidation among the peaceable unarmed residents of the village.”

The NRA put out an alert about the resolution and meeting and asked people to attend. More than 30 people attended including veterans and NRA members. Opposition also came from holders of of concealed carry permits.

Oh, in case anyone is lulled into complacency by the "peaceable unarmed residents of the village" language, the ABQ Journal has had a series of articles this week on NM's drug problem. NM has the highest per capita number of deaths from drug overdoses in the country. And drug dealers/desperate users are most always armed.

Deadly Addiction

For those unfamiliar with the area, Corrales is a smallish separately encorporated area wedged between Albuquerque and Rio Rancho roughly. It gives the air of a quaint folksy town off the beaten path, but it’s really just a speed trap with overpriced goods and services.

It could be worse it could be like Cuba a speed trap on a major highway with no goods or services.

True! Corrales is adjacent to the Rio Grande and the bosque, and Rio Rancho is up on the mesa to the west.

When people are informed, we win. The new media allows the people to become informed. The Mediacracy (rule of the country by the media elite) is ending.

Thanks for the pings Dave.

I hope this turns out at least as bad for that mayor, as when the one in Ruidoso tried the same thing.

At least the one in Ruidoso didn’t try to force people to say the pledge en espanol.

For us, the only reasons to go to Corrales were Village Pizza and Wagner Farms during green chile season.
