ROME: Italian police Saturday announced a 78 percent jump in the amount of gold, silver and cash they have prevented from leaving the country illegally in the first seven months of 2012.

The "Yellow Flame" financial police seized 41 million euros' ($50 million) worth compared with 23.2 million euros in the same period last year, they said in a statement.

In addition to large quantities of cash and treasury bills, they seized 88 kilogrammes of gold and 570 kilos of silver, the statement said.

Dogs trained to detect the scent of money played their part. A Labrador named Tango nabbed a Sri Lankan at a Milan airport with 424,000 euros in a suitcase bulging with clothing, while his brother Cash sniffed out a pensioner trying to spirit out 242,000 euros.

A lot of countries, including the US, are now prioritizing their border controls to prevent lots of assets flowing across borders.

Multinational corporations get around these restrictions by first, slowly flowing lots of cash out to foreign subsidiaries, which is moved in big blocks by plain language messages in routine message traffic, which is almost impossible to detect.

For example, some mid-level manager in Malaysia gets dozens of emails every day, but any messages that have the phrase “...within the last several years...”, in the second paragraph, he is to hand deliver a print of the email to a designated middle manager.

In the message, it secretly directs the transfer of millions of dollars between accounts.

You want your money across the border? Hire an illegal alien to send it south to a relative for deposit in your foreign accounts, and the U.S. government will turn a blind eye. Give a small commission to your illegal workers, repeat as often as required to get it all there.
