Despite lots of talk about unity, diversity, and other feel-good buzzwords, Clay was expected to get virtually all of the African-American vote, while Carnahan had the white vote wrapped up. Since there are slightly more blacks than whites in the district, Clay was predicted to narrowly win. And did.

Yeah, there would have been a time when facts like that would have bothered me, but when 95% of blacks vote in a bloc for a black guy, it has an odd kind of logic to it. (Not a very democratic logic, but it seems to be the new normal). Let's just accept that and act accordingly.

How about 95% of us white people just vote for the guy that looks like us, too?
