Gurudwara shooter was motivated by hate: Mitt Romney
Daily News & Analysis ^ | Wednesday, August 8, 2012 | Press Trust of India

The lone gunman who killed six Sikh worshippers at a Gurudwara in Wisconsin was motivated by hate and this makes the incident even more tragic, Mitt Romney, the Republican presidential candidate said today.

"The tragedy in Wisconsin, where the Sikh temple was invaded by a gunman who was motivated by hate, racial hate, religious hate that makes it even more tragic, and tragic too to have a people that are known for their peaceability and their loving nature to be so brutally attacked," Romney said at a campaign event in Des Moines, Iowa.

"We're thinking of them. Our hearts go out to them and to their community across the nation," said the Republican presidential candidate.

Meanwhile, heart-broken at the incident, top American Senators extended their sympathies to those who were wounded and to the families and friends of those who were killed.

"The Sikh religion is known around the world for its foundational beliefs in peace and tolerance, so it is especially disturbing to me that this violence occurred at a Gurdwara," Senator Mark Warner, Co-Chair of the Senate India Caucus told PTI.

"The violent attack in Wisconsin was heartbreaking, and I extend my sympathies to those who were wounded and to the families and friends of those who were killed," said Warner, the Democratic Senator from Virginia.

Deeply saddened to hear of the tragic shooting at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin, Senator John Cornyn, another Co-Chair to the Senate India Caucus, said: "The victims were, by all accounts, individuals whose contributions to their community and nation positively affected the lives of many people."

"As we reflect on this senseless act, we are at the same time reminded that our nation is built upon a foundation that guarantees the right of all individuals to the free exercise of religion according to their conscience."

"As we look to the days ahead, please know that my thoughts and prayers will remain with the families of the six victims killed, with those wounded, and with the entire Sikh American community, during this difficult time," Cornyn said.

The family of Indira Ghandi might beg to differ as she was murdered by her Sikh bodyguards after she ordered an attack on the Golden Temple in Amritzar.

Even I beg to differ, I still remember daily shooting in Punjab, India in 80s and 90s, killing of Newspaper editors, killing of innocent women and children, bomb blast in Air India, Killing 300+ over Atlantic ocean, transistor bombs in local bus in New Delhi. Long list of violence I can list. Everyday, I remember how I missed/survived one of those random attack by secs.

I'm not sure how the gunman's thoughts make this "more tragic". Whether he killed these folks because thought they were muslims, tripped-out and imagined they were giant lizards, or because he hated their head gear - those folks are still the same amount dead and the same amount detached from their loved ones.

Any death, other than from old-age, is "tragic", whether from suicide, drug overdose, IED, a drunk driver, or nuts flying planes into buildings. The only way a person's "thoughts" should enter into a crime is whether it was intentional or not.

But the tragedy ended only when someone with a gun showed up - that was the only way to stop this killer. What's tragic is that someone with a firearm didn't show up sooner.

was motivated by hate and this makes the incident even more tragic,...

Hey Mitt, how about winning the election and promoting more and stiffer hate crime laws?

"Meet the new boss, same as the old boss..." comes to mind.

The Left has its Willy Horton, and no doubtEric Holder has let it be known he wants the FBI and other law agencies to rattle the trees out there in skinhead land so a few nuts fall to the ground. This Page guy is a dupe.

I wouldn’t paint the entire following of Sikhism by the actions of a couple or even a handful of Sikhs.

Motivated by hatred (of what? Live people?) as opposed to other murderes who are motivated by love? By apathy?

Everything that Romeny says makes me loathe him even more.

Quite right. Sikhism has its extremists, though they never went after the West. They’ve lost a lot of influence in recent years.

The most idiotic part here is the claim Sikhism is a “religion of peace.”

The truth is that Sikhism is quite explicitly a warrior religion, at least as much as Islam is, though dedicated to the protection of the innocent (at least in theory) rather than the imposition of their Law on others.

Islam says, “We will fight you till you submit.”

Sikhism says, “We will cheerfully coexist with you in peace unless you attack us or other innocents. If you do we will rip your face off.”

Sikhism is explicitly dedicated to tolerance of other religions.

Thanks for the quotes. So Sikhism is as much a religion of peace as is the gun named “Peacemaker” (Colt Single Action Army) or as the “War on Terror” (now ended by Obama) aims to achieve peace.

I hope you realize those aren’t actual quotes, though the Muslim version is pretty close.

The Sikh version is very much my paraphrase. But the meaning is pretty accurate.
