“Appearing before family, friends and campaign staff, Steelman announced that she had conceeded the election to Akin at about 10 p.m. Tuesday night.
“Todd Akin is a fine man, and a good conservative,” Steelman said. “I know he’ll fight hard for the people of this state, and I put faith in him.”
Although disappointed with the result, Steelman pledged to do everything she can to help Akin defeat Democratic incumbent Claire McCaskill in November’s election.
Akins victory particularly took Brunner by surprise. Brunner had spent at least $8 million of his own money and had led in all the pre-election polls. Tuesday night, Brunner opted against a public concession speech, instead offering his congratulations in a private phone call to Akin.
