I believe spirit didn't die, but malfunctioned. It was rebooting everyday and sending a shutdown message. AFAIK, Opportunity is still limping on 5 wheels with most of it's voltage reduced and instruments nonfunctional. It's not really because things broke, but they need to shut down systems as voltage gets reduced.
