Vidal wrote some very funny plays, at least one of which I saw in the national theater circuit, but he was one of the meanest, nastiest, leftist POS in the culture field.
His works will long outlive our memory of him. His personna should be buried deep, deeper, and deepest. Perhaps the Devil will let him in Hell, but even the Devil has some standards.

The news story attributes his demise to "complications from pneumonia'. He was 86. But despite his advanced age, in his case, a more precise cause of death might be in order.

My guess is two different places
When they were finished and on the way out I asked him if he enjoyed his food.. He answered that everything was just OK, but the salad was more historical than memorable.. I know he was right about the lettace, so I told him the meal was on the house. He told me it would have been so much better if I would have left it up there.. LOL.. You had to love his style, always an A$$hole..
I loved that he didn't pull any punches, ever! He spared no one he thought was a phony, even his own friends..

Gore Vidal had a lot of scene, at least when it came to evaluating Obama:
