Former state solicitor general Ted Cruz, a tea party-aligned conservative once regarded as a long-shot candidate, has won the Republican runoff in Texas, where he will be the GOP nominee for the U.S. Senate in the November election. The Associated Press has called the race for Cruz over Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst. Cruz will be a heavy favorite over Democratic nominee Paul Sadler, who also won a runoff on Tuesday.
Cruz, an emerging conservative star whose father emigrated to the United States from Cuba, has drawn comparisons to Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and has been lauded by national conservative political pundits and groups for over a year. His victory is a major blow to the Republican establishment in Texas, which lined up squarely behind Dewhurst. Its also a victory for the tea party and national conservatives who lined up behind Cruz even when a surprise win appeared unlikely.
Cruzs win is a remarkable political feat and arguably the Senate upset of the cycle. In early 2011, when Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison announced her intention to retire, observers regarded Dewhurst as a virtual shoo-in to take her place in the upper chamber.
Sarah Palin and Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), who both endorsed Cruzs candidacy, campaigned for him Friday in the Houston area.
While Dewhurst was extremely well-funded, a crucial national ally helped Cruz keep pace on the expensive Texas television airwaves. The anti-tax Club For Growth spent $5.5 million on independent expenditures to help the underdog pull off the upset.
Texas Sen. John Cornyn, the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, congratulated Cruz on his win and added that the candidate and his team ran a remarkable race and this is a well-deserved and well-earned victory.

Now beat the dem in November and don’t disappoint us.
Just the beginning of the impending tsunami. Yippee!
I hope you’re right. We had big gains in ‘10, now we need to add to them.
I hope he’s better on immigration than Bush and Perry, especially since he’ll get to vote on national policy.
That was my #1 question too. From these quotes, he sounds much better than those two, not wishy-washy.
PPP tweeted Ted was at 3% in January. It seems reports of the TEA party’s demise are GREATLY exaggerated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ted Cruz WINS! Drink Hearty, Tea Party!!
Shoulda known a liberal magazine would try to compare Cruz with Rubio.
I doubt anyone is as RINO Leftist as La Raza Rubio is
So...WaPO reports something. Cruz was at about 2% 6 weeks ago. The Bone is going to have some problems spending money!
The silver lining in Texas majorly screwed up primary election this year.
The delay was critical for Cruz’s victory.. IMHO.
Haven’t seen it yet, but what was the percentage of win?
Thanks To Gov Sarah Palin!!!
Yes I know all the Palin haters here (there are a lot of FILTHY Palin haters at FR) will lineup to say she only had a very small hand in the win, they show themselves to be FILTH, I am sick of them all.
Gov Palin was the main reason he won, just as she was the main reason so many won.
You got that right, was a very big win.
Didn’t Dick Cheney endorse Dewcrist?
