Posted on 07/28/2012 8:05:30 PM PDT by thecodont
Californians just can't get enough guns and are on a pace to set a new annual record for the number purchased legally.
Experts with the state Department of Justice predict residents will buy 725,000 rifles, pistols and shotguns in 2012, nearly twice the number they purchased five years ago, when 370,628 were acquired.
Over the last decade, annual purchases have increased despite the lackluster economy and a dramatic drop in crime.
The state doesn't record the personal history of those who purchase guns, nor their reasons for buying them, so it's hard to pinpoint a reason for the increase, experts say.
There are theories, however.

CA had tons of gun enthusiasts when I lived there.
Full auto? no problem!
My how the place has changed.
They went from one person handling the paper to whole office dedicated to processing, appointments made on the net, full steam!
Perhaps Californians can turn things around with gun rights.
Ping to #5
My theory is that the California’s dysfunction at state level is so obvious that no resident trusts the state government to protect or provide for them.
So where is the corresponding spike in gun crimes? Blood in the streets, etc.
The article mentions “a dramatic drop in crime” occurring along with the increase in gun sales, and doesn’t connect the two trends.
One of the most ignorant and blatantly statist statements I have ever read on a news site. Notice the subtext: the state SHOULD record the personal history of those who purchase guns; the state SHOULD record their reasons for buying them.
NO, it shouldn't do either.
The ignorant part: they can't understand why, in a down economy, with overall crime decreasing, why gun purchases are increasing. They cannot make a causal connection, in their hoplophobic worldview, between more guns and less crime. They cannot fathom a world in which the government no longer has the money to protect them.
Sick, sick puppies.
Statistics never support comments generally made on weapons.
A good example is that you can outlaw automatic rifles, and then filter out all the shootings/murders over the past thirty years. The end result is a very small and marginal group of people who would be alive today if you had outlawed the automatic rifles in 1970...as compared against the bulk of deaths reported nation-wide.
Another example is that you can look at Iowa over the past four decades (three million population only recently achieved). You have a state where 45 murders occur on an average per year. Of that...only around 47 percent of the yearly murders are by gun. The rest are listed either by knife or “other”. You go over to Pennsylvania, where there are roughly 650 murders a year, and almost 70 percent relate back to guns. The true issue is urban “warfare” which is a magnet in metropolitan areas, but you never hear the media discuss that matter.
“annual purchases have increased despite the lackluster economy and a dramatic drop in crime”
I remember the Times saying something dumb like this also.
The REASON for the drop in crime IS BECAUSE OF gun purchases.
It’s because of, not in spite of.
“there are theories, however.”.
These fools have no idea what’s coming. None whatsoever.
Well, what I got from the article was that the author didn’t understand why people were buying more guns when crime was decreasing. I’m saying there was a connection between the decrease in crime and the increase in gun purchases.
The underlying theme of all gun grabbers is that more guns = more crime. We’ve had a massive increase in gun sales since ‘08 when we all feared an Obama presidency, all the while crime dropped.
Picture lightbulbs over their heads. About time, doncha think?
Anybody worthwhile running against him?
That is sad as SD used to be a conservative town
Now Normal Heights is anything but normal
Give it time. They’ll get crisis going. IMO
Luckily, the liberals aren’t getting guns. Mostly it’s just the law abiding citizens.
Vote the Ahole out!
Not worthwhile enough or we wouldn't have a Sheriff Gore.
I will pick up two more myself...
SD was conservative but no more. The gay mafia and the pro-ILLEGAL alien crowd have taken over. Sad indeed.
We tried last election but the liberals voted for him.
The government doesn’t need to know if I own a firearm, how many, what my proficiency level is, my TTP or ROE. That is liberty, and nearly impossible for the liberal mindset to grasp.
In sacto we have done a 180 since the late 80's. In fact, last election, both candidates for sheriff ran on a pro ccw platform!, much to the chagrin of the city politicos.
Takes a lot of work to turn the ship, but is can be turned, in small degrees.
Better luck next time.
My how the place has changed.
I used to love Western Steakburger. Gus and Maria were the greatest!
Now I find this article that pans the place.
On further reading, they don’t pan it.
One of my old staples.
725,000 rifles, pistols and shotguns in 2012!
This state is about taxes, fees, licenses, money, money, money.
I wonder if some of those democrats in Sacramento are thinking about what kind of revenue 3 million concealed carry licenses, at $200.00 a pop, and gun class fees, etc, would bring in to feed the government pensions.
They know it will get ugly when the state’s welfare system crashes and the Takers aren’t getting anything from the Makers anymore.
The dead weight in humanity that needs to be culled out isn’t the elderly, or the unborn. It’s those that are deliberate PARASITES that believe they DESERVE to live off everyone else for nothing. That is what is destroying this country. Among other things.
IMHO, Steinberg and his ilk simply cannot agree to that, no matter what the "profit" in terms of taxes. It is totally against their very core of liberalism.
'Sides, doj gets 48 bucks, and county get 28. The qualifications are paid to private run orgs.
I think the PTB are more worried about the number of firearms that are NOT represented by ccw. It stifles their plans long term.
Don't forget, this is per year.
Since roos roberti in 89, I suspect many hundreds of thousands of firearms have passed annually into the hands of the citizenry of this state.
As someone posted up thread, they have no idea.
I sometimes eat at this fast food place where apparently a lot of welfare types dine. The other day I overheard conversations from fellow diners about being in Section 8 housing. Another time, one healthy, able-bodied young woman was discussing how to get her "own apartment" apparently with help from the government. Another time an apparently healthy man, not old or infirm, said he was looking forward to the first of the month because "it's Christmas!" This place also seems to attract a number of panhandlers.
About a week ago I was in a grocery store and on the way in saw/heard an agitated woman talking with the cashier about how "$400 had just been loaded" on her [EBT?] card and how she couldn't figure out why she didn't have any money left and there had to have been a problem with the cashier's computer. Twenty minutes later, after I had finished my shopping and was on my way out the door, she was still there arguing.
A bunch of people here are still proudly wearing rose-colored glasses. They also don spandex and ride their $5,000 bicycles to work (playing with death daily,) and they shop at Whole Foods. I saw a Volt on the road a few days back. Not much changed in CA.
However firearms and ammo will be the #1 currency after TSHTF. They can also last for decades with very little maintenance. And, unlike gold, you can actually use them. I stopped by Reed's recently, and the place was packed.
My how the place has changed.
California has more NRA members than any other state.
I sometimes dine in similar establishments; Obama has emboldened the “welfair types” to the point that they feel they not only are entitled to their government money, but also now completely justified in taking what ever they want from anyone or any establishment they feel is better off then them. I am sensing a break down in society. Those of us who frequently come into contact with this element know that many of them would kill or maim a fellow citizen for $20 if they thought they could get away with it. This along with the feeling that strict “gun control” is coming one way or another if Obama is somehow reelected is causing many to stock up or arm themselves before it is too late.
It would not surprise me.
That may still be true, but they have had their rights eroded by the state.
It is my hope that they turn it around.
I know the place has plenty of conservatives.
LOL, wow man, you have it bad. I have never seen anything like you and your obsession.
I couldn’t find a source for NRA membership by state, which source are you using?
I agree. It was telling the use of the word “DESPITE.”
