If they were killed, the hospital charges probably aren’t that much.
As to why the injured are “more special,” the answer is “publicity.”

Why are THESE victims MORE special than the hundreds that get killed every day? Because it's not the victims that are MORE special, it's the incident.
You don't read about the hundreds of others or see it smeared 24hrs/day on the news, and if Hospitals ROUTINELY practiced their business this way, not only would they go broke, but they would be encouraging violence.
