(CNN) -- A major bridge between Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario, was shut down late Monday due to a bomb threat, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
The Ambassador Bridge was secured and cleared on both sides after the Detroit Police Department received the threat at 8 p.m., according to U.S. Coast Guard Capt. Jeff Ogden.
The U.S. Coast Guard stopped all maritime traffic below the bridge.
Local police agencies were investigating the threat, but Ogden said it was "too soon" to determine who sent the threat.

Wasn’t there a similar incident at the tunnel the other day?

Second busiest border crossing in the country with nearly 1.5 million trucks crossing every year.

Losing either would hurt the USA badly. A million and a half truckloads of freight cross the bridge annually with around 4 million cars using the tunnel.

I have been on the Ambassador bridge in the 60’s and also in the tunnel. I hope nothing happens to either.

I crossed Detroit-to-Windsor Friday morning (after the first scare, which prompted me to use the tunnel rather than the bridge) and then returned, Windsor-to-Detroit (tunnel again) on Sunday afternoon, before the second scare. What surprises me is that in both cases the crossing was very simple and quick. We (wife and I) showed our passports and answered routine questions and were on our way. Traffic seemed pretty light both ways.

Could be labor related. Canadian government wants to cut back 1000 border crossing guards so this could be part of labors tactics.

They need need goods to pass through busy corridors...they might cut a couple jobs at the Moosehump, Montana Border cross, but not Detroit/Windsor...

It would take a few more miles, but there is the BlueWater Bridge between Canada and the US. That bridge is also busy but at least after a 5 hour wait, the truck will cross.
I have seen the BWbridge backed up 10 miles on the US side, without a bomb threat....

More than a few actually. Gotta figure another hour just to get there and depending on where your load is headed a tuck may be forced 4 or 5 hours out of route. Then there's the fact that a great many of those trucks are bound for Windsor and Chatham to begin with. Add those million and a half trucks from Detroit and they might sit at Port Huron for a day or more. Just last week my uncle called while waiting to cross in Detroit and he sat for nearly 9 hours before crossing.

My girlfriend and I use to go to canada for bingo a lot...she was terrified of bridges, when I drove we took the blue water bridge, it had a casino right under the bridge also when she drove we took the ferry that crossed to Sambra, I sure didn’t like that ferry, it didn’t look very water ready....I live just a mile from I 69 so it was a straight shot to the bridge. We had to go a different route to get to the ferry.....

Just reread your post to me and you are right, its quite a few miles from Detroit to Port Huron. Haven’t been to Detroit it years and forgot how far it really is...GG
