When the report came out yesterday all campus television went blank. Truth.

Wow. That makes a strong statement.

I might agree with shutting the sports programs down but in the back of my mind I can’t help believing that a lot more schools are equally guilty of the same crime....we just don’t know about it yet.

This could only happen at Penn State, and here's why. Happy Valley is like an isolated Kingdom, it is difficult to get to, it is in the middle of nowhere....the press in big cities, like Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, don't have staff that are based out of Happy Valley...Penn State had tight control over the media, and if you reported anything derogatory about it, you got your credentials pulled. It was very easy there to "nip things in the bud."

I suspect now that this has come out, you are going to see a lot of former Penn State players come out and start saying things about Paterno, that they were afraid to say before.

Just wow.

I grew up in Nebraska, and used to love the Huskers a lot. My Dad, who is a fan, always warned me to not make football an idol.

Stuff like this is why I have stopped watching most sports (though I will still watch Nebraska football because of my memories with my father). It can bring out the worst in people and institutions.

I haven’t watched a football game, pro or college, in 20 years.

I don't think you've missed a damn thing. All of it comes down to: Our goons can beat your goons.

well. it’s obvious that joe tse tung has a cult of personality surrounding him, even some here on the board . and still i wonder what went through sandusky’s wife’s mind when she heard these kids calling from the basement?

How about shutting down the entire freaking university? This is not about just the football program, it is an indictment on the entire Penn State administration.

What school and in what years did a college in Indy shut down a sorority for almost 8 years?

Well, there were 3 good years out of those 20.

Unbelievable. Do they REALLY think they can make it go away by changing the channel? This really ought to cause those students and others to seriously consider changing schools.

This is their judgment. You reap what you sow. They have sowed crinimal behavior to gain a reputation (money and power) and the fruit is just beginning to be noticed. Yes, they had a good reputation for a season, but forever they will have an awful reptation.

This shouldn't be a suprise to anyone though: "For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light." Luke 8:17

Go figure - God's Truth turned out to...be true!

So basically....it appears bigwigs at PSU still don’t get it.

Happy Valley Kool-Aid isn’t going to make this go away.

They should fire all administrators and all trustees should resign.

What I would like to see come out of this is the realization that all the high-flown talk about "leadership" and "character" in big time college sports is 100%, grade A, industrial strength bulls--t.

It's all about the money. Nothing more than that.

Everybody praised Paterno as the epitome of a leader and a builder of character, but it turns out his own character was a sick joke.

Let's, for a moment, forget about Paterno's handwritten notes discovered by Freeh, and the emails, memos, and other notes by others found by Freeh's group that show how Paterno was involved in the 1998 and 2001 coverups.

Paterno perjured himself THREE times during his grand jury testimony.

First, he testified that the only person he spoke with about Sandusky was AD Tim Curley. That was perjury moment number one. We know from other grand jury testimony and later statements that Paterno also spoke with Gary Schultz.

Second, Paterno testified that he didn't know if any official at Penn State other than Curley was ever informed about the Sandusky 2001 issue. That was perjury. Paterno know that Schultz was informed. (We also have a pretty good idea that Paterno knew that Spanier knew).

Third, Paterno testified that he didn't know of earlier incidents with Sandusky (such as the 1998 incident). That was perjury. We know now from notes, including Paterno's own handwritten notes, that Paterno knew about 1998. We know from Paterno's own schedule from the Paterno Library that he cut short a fundraising trip immediately after the University Police listened in on Sandusky's phone call with the mother of one victim, then canceled a family vacation and all other fundraising and recruiting trips until Ray Gricar decided not to press charges. Those were the only trips canceled the entire year.

Paterno was not only a liar. He perjured himself at least three times in front of the grand jury.

The power of a big football program is awesome. The faithful do not want to hear anything that distracts from their love.

I have seen this in many, many places. Not just in football. Loyalty is great, but it can blind you to great evil.

Agreed. I think it is because once you put someone up on a pedastal and idolize them (as many, many did with Paterno and Penn State in general) and when they fall, then you are faced with a choice. That choice is either to defend them, or to realize and come to grips that you backed the wrong thing/person/idol for the wrong reason. Sad to say, not many like to admit they are wrong, so they take up the defensive position with all they can muster because it means they don't have to face the fact that they idolized evil which appeared to them as something good.

You see it all the time in cults and fans of others who have proven to evil appearing as light. Many examples come to mind. They always show the same behavior.

Gator football has been a big part of my life, but believe me, if this happened in Gainesville, I’d be the first one to say “shut it down.”

Ohio State is being punished this season for the actions of a few. I refer to Tattoogate. The Buckeyes will be forbidden any participation in post-season games in 2012 as a result. If Penn State plays any post-season games the NCAA will officially become an obscenity
