Look - I don’t agree with Marvel here and I have stopped adding to my 20k comic collection the last 5 years as both major publishers have been pushing PC hard. For me that’s a personal burden as it is my escape - I deal by picking up missing older issues and reading more novels/history.
That being said - the X-men concept is not about ‘Evil like McCarthy’ only. It is also about Evil Like Hitler aka those who are out to exterminate mutants out of fear and misunderstanding. Yes there is also the evil like magneto who wants to punish those who will otherwise hunt down the mutants, and the evil like mccarthy attempt at painting people who are unable to ‘accept’ differences (the liberal’s would say racist - though in this case it would be a ‘geneticist’?). There are significant stories in the series that use the parallel of what was done to the Jewish people in WWII, and many are quite excellent.
I’ll give you that I’m ticked at the ‘in your face’ that is being done by these guys. It’s no different then when the sitcom Soap first brought the issue out as a character in the late 70s(timing?).
Kids aren’t stupid they know when they are being sold a box of rocks - I can’t tell you how many of them have told me at stores and cons that they were ticked about the Superman thing a few years back. I turn them to the older issues (I especially promote the old 50 cent 100 page DCs as they have 40, 50, 60, and 70s stories in them). Some of the older issues can be picked up for the same price as many new ones. If I ever start filling gaps that are more recent it’ll be out of the $1 bin because I refuse to give them a profit as long as they continue to try substituting PC and art for story.
K I’ll climb off my box and shut up now. Just an area I know something about so I had to voice my piece. By the way if your looking for real story, art, and history combined that won a pulitzer when it still meant something try Maus.
And I am familiar with the original Kirby/Lee X-Men and the modern movies and this graphic novel from the 80s.
The modern mythos makes it clear that politicians (certainly not liberal) are the problem. And tries to claim that the fear is ungrounded.
Anyone morphing to misrepresent someone else or reading their brainwaves IS a threat. And some like the Brotherhood Of Evil Mutants ARE BLOODY WELL EVIL.
