Tonight on the PBS NewsHour, our Health Unit takes a look at what's becoming a controversial part of the federal health care reform law: the expansion of Medicaid to cover up to 17 million uninsured adults.
While the individual mandate has been the headline-grabber since last week's decision, expansion of the shared federal-state program that provides health care to poor people is also a major component of the Affordable Care Act. It was supposed to bring millions of low income Americans into the program, including childless adults who right now are not covered in most states.
But Republican governors in at least seven states have expressed hostility toward the Medicaid expansion and indicate they may not go along with it.
Now, our partners at Kaiser Health News have found a new wrinkle in the equation. Check out this story from Phil Galewitz. And, of course, tune in to the broadcast tonight for our full coverage.

Hey, pelosi—’guess you’ll find out what’s in the bill after scotus decides which parts of the bill to uphold.
They already take $99.90 out of my SS check for Medical....and I still have to buy a supplement AND they already have the thousands I paid into the “plan”.
Whoops - I kind of thought things might get a bit interesting with the Medicaid ruling. The obvious solution for people living in a free state (like MS or TX) is to move to a ‘more compassionate’ Blue State. Heck, maybe here in Texas we’ll even give them the bus tickets.
“They already take $99.90 out of my SS check for Medical....and I still have to buy a supplement AND they already have the thousands I paid into the plan.”
LOL. They don’t HAVE the thousands that you paid into the plan - they spent it DECADES AGO. At some point Americans, I hope, will realize that - for that’s the first step in starting to clean up entitlements.
"Another way states might choose to minimize their costs is by shifting people who are eligible for federal subsidies for private insurance out of the Medicaid program and into new online markets created by the law. That saves states money because the federal government pays the entire cost of the subsidies -- unlike Medicaid, where states share in the costs."
I'm hoping the governor of my state lets this happen.
Obamacare is one big, giant mess. And people who already have decent insurance are going to find Obama has nothing for them except virulent trouble.
People are going to be cursing his name for years.
Question now becomes are they going to do away with Medicare or fold it into DeathCare. Judging by the emphasis on killing off the elderly, I’m thinking they will try to give with one finger and take away the whole hand.
“They already take $99.90 out of my SS check for Medical....and I still have to buy a supplement AND they already have the thousands I paid into the plan.”
and in 2013 they will take $113 and in 2014 (just 18 months from now) they will start taking $247 per month. These fee increases will be huge drains on poor elderly people’s incomes.
Looks like Roberts knew what he was doing.
With all the liberal patting Obama on the back over this huge 'victory' (to get him re-elected) and the Republican whining on the other side over'losing' , this part of the SCOTUS ruling was ignored.
Huge Obama victory, libs cheer! OH-OH, where did this come from? This reminds me of when Boehner said he got 95% of what he wanted in a bill the same house members want to repeal.
Solution?? repeal Obama-care.
At least Bernard Madoff went to prison for his deeds.
“They dont HAVE the thousands that you paid into the plan - they spent it DECADES AGO.”
Imagine if a private insurance company behaved in the same fashion. Its CEOs would be sent to jail in a heartbeat.
“People are going to curse his name for years.” I already have been cursing his name for years.
This was Obama’s plan from the start. Move those people to Obamacare and villify the Republicans while doing it.
Kind of hard to figure. Pelosi has got to be as old as those they are trying to kill off with obamacare.
Companies will drop health insurance like they dropped pensions when 401K’s came along... We’re creating the darkness...
Pelosi, and the other congresscritters, are exempt from ObamaCare. And if that were not the case, she is too rich to care.
I worked a several companies, but except for the last I didn't stay long enough (7 years or so) to get vested in the pension plans. And even if I had, the plans are so loaded to the back end that it would have been worthless. But the one cash value profit sharing plan (similar to 401K) that I got to roll over later to an IRA paid off nicely.
401K/IRAs are much better than a pension plan for all but the executive class.
As far as ObamaCare goes, you are right, things look dark.
I"m a fan of HSAs, especially if you start young, but that's one Reaganite solution that Obama wants to kill.
The only simple (to express, not do) way to stop this is to kill the income tax, repeal the 16th amendment. Any other way out will go through a morass of compromise, and when good compromises with evil, evil wins.
Unless the US voters have an epiphany, you might end up with a "compromised" repeal of the 16th amendment (a 2000 page amendment?), if it even got that far.
Things look indeed dark, unless something changes.
That statement could be interpreted to mean "what he was doing" was to destroy federalism, but assume you meant he was trying to create a poison pill for Obamacare. Whatever his motives, I am not convinced this is a good thing. Time will tell.
With all the liberal patting Obama on the back over this huge 'victory' (to get him re-elected) and the Republican whining on the other side over'losing' , this part of the SCOTUS ruling was ignored.
Some on FR have not discussed it, but in general it was hardly ignored.
Suppose that several states refuse the Obamacare expansions.
1) Dems are ready to demagogue governors and state legislatures who do not embrace the expansion. That could make a bigger difference in the 2014 elections than 2012.
2) Blue states are going to take all the fed money, and we all have to pay for that eventually. What happens if a blue state goes bankrupt because of its eventual "required contributions?" Bailout?
3) Don't the illegals, etc., go to federally-propped-up exchanges? Don't we get bigger government, more pork, more debt?
If Obamacare folds because of the Roberts ruling, the consensus will be that he is a genius, a long term thinker. Otherwise, many will blame Roberts, even if the GOP could have used the ruling to destroy Obamacare, (although I believe that would be much easier said than done -- perhaps beyond the capability/determination of GOP politicians).
Again, time will tell.
