WASHINGTON President Barack Obama is marking the Fourth of July by thanking service members and their families, who he said "represent what is best in America."
The president, accompanied by first lady Michelle Obama, hosted a barbecue and concert Wednesday for the families on the White House South Lawn.
Obama saluted "this generation of heroes" for their service and sacrifice to defend American freedoms, specifically thanking them for bringing Osama bin Laden to justice and working to get out of Afghanistan.

Wife and I just watched `Act of Valor.’ Great movie.
Then I walked the pup before it gets too dark, since this is his first 4th of July.
I walked by a couple dozen houses in the neighborhood and saw two flags out.
I’m thinking the rest of the neighborhood plans to celebrate this 4th of July next 4th of July with Samson and me, after the Louse in the White House is shown the door.
I thought it was reported here on Free Republic that Obama was going to spend the 4th at a fundraiser in Paris. What happened to those plans?
I think that the Paris fundraiser is (or was) happening with George Clooney, but I was pretty sure that he was spending the 4th here.
He did the routine with the soldiers and naturalization ceremony back in 2009. They don’t have one original thought in their heads and copy others or repeat the same old routines over and over.
The one constant is that they HATE American tradition and piss on it every chance they get.
