This “study” violates the mos basic rules of medical research AND statistical analysis - all to support a predetermination. And the liberals at Yahoo ‘News’ eat it up.

“Considering that Freud is one of the unholy trinity of the so-called “school of suspicion” (the others are Karl Marx and Friedrich Nietzsche), psychiatry ought to be rejected as the abomination it is.”

You are absolutely correct. See Against Therapy by Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson. Therapy and counseling is complete bunk. The therapy is based on “transference” developing the trust of the client, so they will do what you want them to do. Your therapy is then dictated by whatever is in the therapist’s sick little mind. Never had to spank mine, nor swat, not even once. However, I do believe it isn’t the spanking per se but the circumstances and especially how you treat the child afterwards. You should, for example, be somewhat sad afterwards, or at least pretend to be! :)

My favorite spanking story was when my middle kid was 14 or 15, and I’m driving with him in the front seat. He starts getting on my case and tell him to stop, he continues, I get angry and tell him to stop again. He continues - then, without even thinking (that’s what so good about it), a BACKHAND to the face. He had braces, so the blow cut his lip a bit. He cried, threatened to tell mom, but mom is from the other part of the world where Dr. Spock doesn’t exist, so he knew that mom would ask why I did hit him harder.

5 minutes later, he had stopped crying and I’ve never had to come close to whacking him again, and he does what I ask him to do (within reason, of course) - and that was 5 years ago. I recently asked him to rate his childhood on a scale of 1 to 10, knowing that he had been spanked since he was an infant. He gave it an 11. Oh yea, he LOVES animals too.

We should all share our success stories here.

There are enormous cadres of ADULTS with whom reasoning is impossible. They’re called Liberals.

To attempt reason with a child is sheer folly.

There ARE child psychologists such as Dr. Ferber who espouse early communication techniques and intelligence expansion play who are worth a read, but anyone who says that “reasoning” with an irrational animal should be disallowed from even coming in contact with children, let alone raising them.

At Easter time the wife and I were at my brothers and his wifes place. They have a daughter who is 41 years old, so not a child. My sis in law read and lived by the Spock book popular in the 1960’s which advocated never saying no and never physically punishing a child no matter what.

Following is what I and my wife witnessed. I would like you to please tell me what you yourselves would have done in this same situation as I will now describe it.

Child (remember she is 41 yrs old_ was in a rather heated discussion with dad and at some point she totally lost it and told dad to go :F**k himself, he was a “F**k” a “loser” that “everyone hates him” (sounds like projection here) and a few other choice epithets. Her mother was there and basically was wringing her hands begging her to stop, her dad as well since he was yelling also although used no profanity and relegated his argument to “how dare she speak to him in that way” sort of rhetoric.

What are your opinions on the behavior of the mom and dad in response to this outburst? How would you have handled it yourselves?

Thanks for your input.

Spanking Linked to Mental Illness, Says Study

Wait. Let me guess. Next week's study is going to suggest that breast-feeding kids until they are six is linked to high intellect and leadership qualities.

The week after that the study is going to say that boys who sit down to pee live happier lives.

Slapping, shoving, grabbing and hitting anywhere else but the buttocks, are NOT spanking. Such forms of “punishment” are not correction. Instead of correction, they convey to the child parental disrespect. It is born of a parent’s annoyance and is not motived by a loving desire to guide a child.
Even verbal abuse has at it’s core disrespect of the child’s value as a human being.
So this silly study tells us nothing we do not already know. Genuine abuse is harmful, loving correction is not.

They estimate that as much as 7 percent of adult mental illness may be attributable to childhood physical punishment, including slapping, shoving, grabbing, and hitting

These things are not spanking! A pop on their little bottoms to emphasize the danger of running out into the street is NOT shoving and slapping!

This whole article is totally misleading!!

If you go to the original study, they researchers are looking at HARSH punishment. Harsh punishment is operationalized as follows quote from the study):

“The types of child maltreatment that were assessed included physical punishment, physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, emotional neglect, physical neglect, and exposure to intimate partner violence (eg, having a battered mother”

The study isn’t looking at the occasional swat on the rump.

I had a psych professor back in the 1970’s who said that spanking is the only way to deal with two year olds as they have not yet developed the ability to reason. Bet he wouldn’t have gotten tenure today.

Zapp: So, this Leela. I know she's a very sensuous woman but what manner of captain is she?
Fry: She's really strict.
Bender: And mean.
Zapp: I see. Does she by any chance give the crewmembers spankings?
Fry: No, she just makes us do work and stuff.
Zapp: Good, good. But should she ever institute some sort of bare-bottom spanking policy, let me go in your place. I won't have my comrades harmed.

I gathering that they are trying to lump a swat to the rear with beating a child into the hospital.

That’s said, the modern world does give us more options. When I was a kid, I’d rather be spanked than grounded. Spanking was done and over with, while a grounding lasted “forever.”

“I have three rules:
#1 Never use my hand.
#2 Never spank out of anger.
#3 Always sit down with the child afterwards and explain why it was necessary and that I love them.”

I’m not sure about the hand part. A hand can better judge the amount of force being applied.

How do you find a link in something that 90% of parents did? Shouldn’t that make mental illness the “norm”? And shouldn’t mental illness be on the decline as spanking goes away and brattiness and self-centeredness increase?

That completely made my day, LOL.

Everybody I know got spanked as kids. We rightly feared the consequences of misbehaving. Kids today know they have nothing to fear from their weenie parents, so they act like beasts. Case in point: recently I was in Target, and a kid in the shopping cart was howling and screaming like something possessed. Not crying, mind you-—howling, to get his way. His numb mother’s reaction was to walk around going, “Sssssh....hush now...ssssh”, with no effect at all.Meanwhile, the rest of us had our eardrums blown out.

And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head.

And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the Lord. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

Exactly, this study shows correlation, but not causality. To show causality there’d have to be a long term study employing the scientific method ... including the use of a control group.

This is something taught starting in 6th and 7th grade science. Or at least was when I was growing up in the early 80s. This shows that people are really ignorant, and that the scientific community understands that they’re ignorant.

So just because Scientologits speak out against psychiatry, then any opinions that may have a superficial resemblance to theirs (but actually share no commonality) are wrong, and psychiatry is OK? How many times has the DSM been altered over the years? Psychiatry is just as much of witchcraft as L. Ron’s cult.

This should have been resolved at 41 MONTHS not years!! The most vile, nasty, aggressive, violent children I have experienced (all in the last 9 years or so) are the ones who were never spanked. The government through various busy body agencies such as Child Protective Services have outlawed ALL correction whether verbal or corporal as “abuse.” Whereas “diagnosing” children’s outbursts and handy them a bunch of mind bending, health endangering pills is NOT abuse. My husband’s ex-wife is a CPS worker and she is probably the worst mother on the face of this earth (I’m a successful parent with two grown children, one married for over 8 years now, the other in the Air Force). She beFRIENDS her children but does not PARENT them. They are all on “meds” for various “ailments” such as phoney “learning disabilities” (read: Mom doesn’t put her boot up their arses), failing school (all three of them and not just “F” failing, Marianas Trench failing and skipping school) and headed for a life of felonious activity, teen pregnancy and drug abuse. It’s very sad when parents abdicate their parental responsibilty and make their children their equals or worse yet superiors.

CPS is merely a tool for vindictive (usually) mothers to get back at fathers for daring to move on after they divorce/dump said fathers. Dad doesn’t DARE train/instruct/correct his children on his ‘parenting time’ should she be magnanimous as court-appointed parental sovreign, enough not to thwart it. REAL child abuse is seldom if ever investigated. To do so is too politically incorrect and dangerous (involves venturing into minority communities).
