I believe he was describing what happened at his wife's church and I inferred that he goes to a different church. I also thought he was saying that he liked what happened at his wife's church and needs to change churches from his to hers.

Your suggestion that he is at a different church than her may be it, but I can’t personally understand a husband and wife who go to different churches.
