President Obama grabbed hold of the third rail of Boston politics and didnt let go Monday night: He brought up the Red Sox.
Finally, the president said, wrapping up his introductions at a fundraiser there, I just want to say thank you for Youkilis.
That would be Kevin Youkilis, beloved slugger, who was traded this week to the Chicago White Sox, Obamas hometown team. The crowd, members of which paid at least $144 a ticket to see the president at Symphony Hall, immediately booed playfully.
Im just sayin. Hes going to have to change the color of his socks, Obama continued.
The audience booed again, though some did seem to be cheering Youk, a staple at Fenway during his nine seasons with the club.
I didnt think Id get any boos out of here, Obama said. I guess I shouldnt have brought up baseball. I understand. My mistake. Youve got to know your crowd.
Indeed you do, particularly given recent history in Beantown, where mixing baseball and politics has been a dicey proposition.

Obama is about as much a baseball fan as his Portuguese Water Dog, Bo. What a dimwit! You don’t go into a town and talk about sports, local food, or local certain current events without careful research. You just don’t wing-it.
Like John F. Kerry going to “Pat’s Steaks” in South Philly and asking for swiss cheese on his cheesesteak, while most of his supporters were thinking “What a putz!” How many votes get lost on such gaffs?
On the bright side now he’ll be able to name a White Sox player if anyone asks him.
I’m a big White Sox fan.
Really? Who’s your favorite player?
Duh, um, mmmmmm, ya know,..........
Someone could ask Obama if the White Sox play in Lambert Field and he probably wouldn't know the answer.
He couldn’t name one White Sox player even after he called Buhrle after he pitched a perfect game. The Incompetent One is a phoney through and through.
Remember when Kerry was asked who his favorite Red Sox player was?
He answered: “Manny Ortiz”
What a putz.
Do you remember when Obama spoke at Penn State and expressed his love of the “Nitally Lions”?
And how his ‘favorite’ team played in “Cominskey” Park.
