We were standing at the gate waiting to be admitted to the Parade Deck. We were between Gen Tryon's quarters and the quarters of another officer. Gen. Tryon and his wife walked out of their back door - they were on their way to a social function. They stopped and talked with the people waiting to get in. He asked one guy with a small child whether his son was going to be a Marine. I spoke up and said "I have a candidate, General." He shook John's hand and asked him what his specialty was going to be. I told him "03." (Grunt) The General said he was an 03 as well. (He was also in Recon.) He noticed my 3/5 patch on my shirt and volunteered that he had been with Lima 3/5 early in his career. He asked me what Platoon I was in - 3rd. He said that he was 3rd Platoon as well. I asked him for the picture together and he most kindly agreed. My impression is that he is a very nice guy. Based upon his long and illustrious career, he is also an outstanding Marine. Counting his time at the Naval Academy, he has served for over 40 years.
Genuflectimus non ad principem sed ad Principem Pacis!
Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. (Isaiah 49:1 KJV)
