The number of people permitted to carry concealed weapons in Florida is up 33 percent this year, according to the Florida Department of Agriculture.
The data, calculated as of May 31, 2012, shows women being issued more permits than ever before.
Every Sunday in Orlando, its Ladies Day at The Shooting Gallery Gun Range on West 39th Street near John Young Parkway.
At the gun range, News 13 met several women who are already carrying or thinking about carrying a concealed weapon.
Some women mentioned the uncertain economy as a primary factor to protect themselves with a concealed handgun.
I probably got it around three months ago, said Orlando resident Lisa Fairchild.
Just so I can carry a concealed weapon for self-protection, said Fairchild answering a question about why she made the decision.
Fairchild and her friends said that it's not surprising the number of issued permits is up 33 percent in 2012, compared to 2011.
They said it's a right and it is a natural instinct for women and men to want to protect themselves.
I was encouraged and like I said, being able to carry the Florida license, being reciprocated and recognized in so many other states also helped, said Orlando resident Catherine Daugherty.
One out of every five active permits are carried by women in Florida.
Laura Giancone said she never thought about applying for a permit until her friends began talking about it.
It's a possibility. It's not something that's always crossed my mind. I'm open for the possibility of changing my mind and getting one, but right now I do feel safe in my environment, said Giancone, who lives in Davenport.

Thank you Founding Fathers.
“Some women mentioned the uncertain economy as a primary factor to protect themselves with a concealed handgun. “
This has nothing to do with the “uncertain economy”. It is all about protecting ones self from the feral animals and their champions holder and hussein.
I wonder if Al Sharpton knows that Trevor Martin turned out to be Florida’s greatest gun salesman.
Given the longevity of Florida’s CCW program, this is a rather significant increase in such a short time.
A smart politician (a contradiction, I know) would look at this and say “Um.... people are getting ready for something big... and it doesn’t look like a trip to Disney’s theme parks...”
BTW - what’s the most recent estimate for the state population of FL? About 18, 19 million?
If it’s under 20 mil, the point at which they have more than 1 million CCW’s means that they’re packing heat in utterly incredible numbers - more than 5%. Take out the children from the overall pop numbers, then compute the ratio of adults with a CCW... and suddenly, Florida looks like a highly uninviting place for criminals.
And any riots or other actions fomented by this administration. They also want to exercise their 2nd Amendment rights while they still can.
When we have a president and the Democratic party doing everything they can to create division, people are forced to protect themselves against the human filth the leftist vitriol turns into predators. An unarmed white person is raw meat for the wolves.
Yup. Another one of them there “rights” granted you (maybe) by the government. What happened? I guess everything is open to how you perceive it. Fools aplenty with no comprehension skills or understanding of history. Sadly very little history is taught in schools today. And, if it is, everything is the evil white mans fault. No mention of african tribes capturing and selling other tribesman as slaves.
Helping keep mankind warm for 65 years.

Thank you for the tip!
“but right now I do feel safe in my environment, said Giancone,”
The time to get one is BEFORE you need it, not AFTER!
“Feeling safe” is a dynamic that can change in a millisecond. I would have thought this was pretty obvious.
