Former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) today backed the Republican primary challenger to Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch.
Santorum, a presidential candidate until two months ago, announced his endorsement of former state Sen. Dan Liljenquist in an email to members of his new organization, Patriot Voices.
Dan Liljenquist is the stronger conservative in this race, Santorum wrote. Ive known Orrin Hatch for years and believe he is a very good man, but in a deeply conservative state like Utah, we must elect authentic conservatives. I believe Dan Liljenquist is that candidate.
Hatch has the support of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney and is favored to win the June 26 primary. Romney has filmed television ads for Hatch and has appeared with him on the stump in Utah.

But.. isn’t that contrary to the edict of Sarah?
Yeah!!!!!!!!!!
Glad to see it.
Excellent news and great move on Rick Santorum’s part. We need new conservative blood in the Senate and some of those old ghosts have to find a new haunt.
Checkmate Hatch! Slither out from under the rock tomorrow, call a press conference and tell the people you support the amnesty program but are OUTRAGED that it was done without the cover of congress. See where that gets you in November.
I always knew Rick was a smart guy!
We shall see, but Hatch is after all a PA native, and Rick is from VA. People in UT think Hatch is indispensable, like the WV ones thought of Byrd and the MA people of Hatch’s old friend EMK.
Eleanor Milhouse Kennedy?
“But.. isnt that contrary to the edict of Sarah?”
I thought it was the edict of Mark Levin.
Oh, well that makes it alright then.
Being Independent, rather than Republican, I won’t be voting in this primary race. However, Hatch will never, ever, ever get my vote. I don’t care who endorses him. I can look at his substantially bad record.
Even if you can’t vote, encourage your Republican friends to vote. Put a Liljenquist For Senate sign in your yard and a Liljenquist bumper sticker on your car. Every little bit helps.
But, but, but, but, St. Sarah said Orrin was a true conservative and all the Fringrichers here said that Santorum was a liberal big spending crypto-Demonrat who would do anything to sell out conservatives and satisfy the squishy elite Repubs. Like Hatch.
I’m confused. St. Sarah is the lodestone for True Conservatism, isn’t she?
But she squished on Hatch? Tell me it ain’t so.
i think she was merely following through with his endorsement during the VP run. I dont think she has stumped for him. I chalk it up to obligation, same thing when she did it for McPain. She knows who hatch is. watch her reaction when Hatch loses.
I can't stand the screechiness or the talking-as-if-to-kindergartners.
You be sure to tell me about it instead.
I wish Scott Howell was a conservative Republican. He calls himself a conservative Democrat. Don’t know yet if I will vote for him. He called last week and I asked flat out about voting for Obambi. He obfuscated. Not a good sign.
I think Hatch will win. Little Danny boy is a lightweight.
Arlen, but not Orrin? I guess a few years makes a difference. Good to see that he learned from it. Hatch isn’t the worst we have, but he certainly isn’t the best. Good on the Judicial Committee, but not much else. Sarah endorsed McCain, Rick endorsed Specter. Nobody is pure. It’s politics.
“But she squished on Hatch? Tell me it aint so.”
Everybody makes mistakes.
No, that excuse is ONLY good for her horrible endorsement of McCain.
That said I'm not that keen on this Lillianquist guy, however I wouldn't go so far as to endorse Hatch.
