Obama: I Can't Just Suspend Deportations Through Executive Order, There Are Laws on on the Books That was then, this is now. Daniel Halper June 15, 2012 12:19 PM
In March 2011, speaking at Univision town hall in Washington, D.C., Barack Obama firmly stated that, as president, he can't simply "suspend deportations" with only an executive order. "With respect to the notion that I can just suspend deportations through executive order, thats just not the case, because there are laws on the books that Congress has passed," President Obama said then.
His statement then was in response to this straight forward question, "What if at least you grant temporary protective status, TPS, to undocumented students? If the answer is yes, when? And if no, why not?"
Today, the Obama administration seems to be contradicting what the president once believed. With the announcement that young illegal immigrants who "do not present a risk to national security or public safety" will not be deported, Obama seems to have turned a corner. Now the Obama administration will be using prosecutorial discretion not to go after these people.
So, what has happened since then? Has the president "evolved" on immigration the way he did on gay marriage?
There has not been any change to the laws on the books that would offer a different legal course regarding immigration. Instead, it appears to be a reinterpretation of the law--and of executive power--on the part of President Obama.
It's amazing what an election year can do to one's own interpretation of laws on the books!
I would like someone to address the fact that 40-50% of recent graduates are unemployed and Zero is going to give nearly a million illegal ‘young people’ work permits???? You have got to be kidding me!!!
This is an RNC commercial waiting to be written.
Rush is delayed an hour in Az. He just addressed the unemployment aspect but not the’youth’ angle of it.
No, he's decided that when it comes to getting reelected, the jig is up. He'll do as much damage as he can while he can.
Will someone please quote this word for word back to his face or to his carny Carney and ask what gives?
Can you tell us if the president has had a psychological examination
recently in light of some of his recent actions?
Problem is, the GOP-e favors amnesty, too. Remember spring 2007, when GWB, McCain, Graham, et al, joined with Reid, Kennedy and the rest of the Rats against us conservatives? That was the moment I swore I would never again give one red cent to the RNC.
Just add this to the long list and move on...No news here...It's going to get a lot worse than this...
Why, all of a sudden, is he paying attention to the "laws on the books?" They never seemed to bother him before.
Oh, I get it. He always has to blame someone or something for his failure, inaction, stupidity, etc.
It used to be George Bush, rich people, Europeans, Bain capital. Now it's those nasty "laws on the books."
If it weren't for them, we'd all be living in Obamatopia.
I'm surprised he didn't do this much earlier in his term. He's going to have a big job getting all these newly amnestied people registered to vote by November, which I suspect is his next executive order (voting rights for amnestied non-citizens).
Laws never stopped Obama before. Copout. Theatrics.
